Grace Notes:
For All the Saints
When the person waiting on our table this week saw that we had raised our glasses several times for toasts, she asked "Are you celebrating something special?" "Yes," we said, "we're celebrating the life of Gerald Faaren who died on this twenty sixth day of October." It wasn't the answer she expected.

Gerald was my wife's father. He was supremely kind and generous, and he took delight in all eighty four years of life that God gave him. Now, it is our tradition to give thanks for him on his "Feast Day", as we call it. Perhaps many of you do the same thing in your own family traditions.

Prayers and Blessing for the Nicaragua Mission Team

We are glad the the following people from St. Mark's are able to participate in a Habitat for Humanity Global Village project in Nicaragua from  October 30-November 8: Gary and Linda Petersen (Team Leaders), Jan Ruud and Linda Faaren, Diana Busch, Steve Cox, Loren Donahue, Don Hauiesen, Deborah Herforth, Bill Klancke, Tom Roberts, and Elizabeth Skarshaug. They will be joined members of other churches, including Brad and Julie Bitar, Carol Petersen, Bruce Wilcox, Gordon and Melissa Henry, and Marcia and Mike Madden. Please keep them in your prayers as they travel and serve and learn about the many gifts that God has gives us to share with each other in the global village that is created and loved by God.

Habitat for Humanity International is an ecumenical Christian ministry that welcomes to its work all people  dedicated to the cause of eliminating poverty housing. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat has built, rehabilitated,  repaired and improved more than 600,000 houses worldwide providing simple, decent and affordable shelter  for more than 3 million people.  Habitat for Humanity began working in Nicaragua in 1984. Since then, Habitat for Humanity Nicaragua has served more than 5,000 families in that beloved country.

Stewardship 102: Plans for Giving

Third quarter giving statements arrived in our mailboxes in the past few days, and we read about the continuing generosity of St. Mark's people in supporting the ministries of our congregation. Again, the Stewardship Ministry Team gives thanks for the faithful response throughout 2015!

The Plan for Giving card in the 3rd quarter mailing invites us to consider our financial contributions for the first six months of 2016.   If you submitted a Plan for Giving for 2015 and wish to continue at the same level for January to June 2016, simply check the option on the card and your amount will be entered into the church data base. If you submitted and Plan for 2015 and wish to change your giving, complete the information on the card. For those who did not do a plan for 2015 and want to make a plan now, this is the card you may use.

If you are a person who wishes to make a one-time gift anytime in 2015 or until June 2016, the card has a space for that option as well.

Plans for Giving are a good tool to encourage intention in giving. They are also helpful to our council and Finance Committee as they prepared and monitor budgets. Thanks, in advance, for your prayerful consideration of the invitation to make a Plan. Please bring or mail them to church by November 15.

Please remember that Plans for Giving can be changed at any time by contacting Pat Buck in the church office.

Responding to the Tragedy in Roseburg, Oregon

Sometimes when tragedy strikes a community it is difficult to know how to respond in a meaningful manner. Pastor Jane Baker of Faith Lutheran Church in Roseburg, Oregon gives us an opportunity to respond to the shootings that recently took place in their community. She asks for support for Casa de Belen, a shelter for homeless teens which was impacted by the recent shootings at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. The shelter couldn't hold its annual fundraiser, and thus is asking for outside help. This shelter is the kind of service that could help keep the marginalized youth engaged. It's these kids who sometimes prove so disaffected that they end up isolated and attracted to lashing out. Supporting this shelter could be a one-time effort and give tangible support to a traumatized community shattered by horrific gun violence. If you would like to support this shelter, you can respond directly by following the link in her letter or by putting some funds in an offering envelope with the designation: For Casa de Belen in Roseburg. The church will then send the funds received. Thank you from the Peace and Justice Ministry Team.

Interfaith Bible Study

You're invited to join an Interfaith Bible Study with members of Temple Beth El, Bethany Presbyterian Church, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, and our own St. Mark's Lutheran Church by The Narrows. The topic of our study this Fall is: "Finding God in the Other."  We'll explore Bible stories that teach us to see God in those who are different from us. From Hagar the Egyptian slave to Cyrus the Persian conquerer, we'll explore how God works in and through those whom God chooses, whether we like it or not. Please mark these dates on your calendar and plan to join us for this engaging series that will be led by the clergy of each congregation:
Nov. 5, 7:00pm at Temple Beth El, led by Pastor Sarah Wiles
Dec. 3, 7:00pm at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, led by Pastor Jan Ruud

To receive the Bible readings and discussion questions ahead of time, add your name to the sign-up sheet in the narthex or contact Pastor Ruud at:  [email protected].

New Art, Mural Painting

There is a new piece of art in the Parish Commons to the left of the coffee pots.  The mural painting is a standard depiction, found on church walls throughout Ethiopia, of St. Yared, who brought music to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.  He is said to have created the three distinctive types of church music (liturgical chants) inspired and guided by the Holy Spirit, who sent three angels to him in the form of birds.  It is their songs that formed the basis of the music he created.  As the story goes, when he sang this music in front of King GebreMeskel (the kings game means "servant of the cross"), they were both so enthralled by the music that neither one realized the king's spear had stabbed St. Yared's foot.  St. Yared is painted with his prayer stick in one hand and a sistrum (a rhythmic musical instrument of very ancient origin) in the other, both of which are still used today when clerics and choristers chant during church services.

The painting is by Gard Giday, an artist from Aksum, who was born in 1976.  He is a prominent artist known for his mural paintings that cover the walls in many churches in northern Ethiopia.  His painting is exactly the sort that is first painted and then pasted on the walls of those churches, where they have assisted the teaching and sustaining of Christianity for at least fourteen hundred years. (Christianity arrived in Ethiopia in 330CE.)
