symposiumeval3rd Annual MACTE Symposium Highlights

The Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) held its Third Annual Symposium for Montessori Teacher Educators, December 5-7, 2014 in Alexandria, VA. This event draws teacher educators from around the world. The focus of this year's Symposium was on recognition of the Montessori teaching diploma/credential by State Departments of Education. Our opening reception honored Dennis Schapiro as the recipient of the first MACTE award for Innovation in Montessori Teacher Education.  Denny's wife Jeanne Andre and their two sons Jeremiah and Tokumbo were in attendance to receive the award.

Tokumbo, Jeanne and Jeremiah

Dr. Judith Eaton, the president of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), gave the keynote. Her keynote address was titled: Does Accreditation Matter? She included an overview and history of accreditation in the United States.

Symposium highlights included presentations on the teacher qualification registries and teacher licensure within each state. Montessori advocates shared success stories from Oregon and South Carolina and a common theme was the importance of cultivating direct personal relationships with state decision makers and implementers. The final day of the symposium was an Open Space format where teacher educators created spontaneous discussion topics relevant to their work. Many of the topics stemmed from the presentations offered the day before while others explored other new topics within state regulations, quality assessment, international accreditation, online training components and best practices for teacher education.  See the full schedule of events below.

Saturday evening there was a reception to honor the 2014 - 2015 Wisdom of the Elders recipients. Each recipient spoke poignantly with regard to his or her impact on Montessori education. This years honorees included, Dr. Elizabeth Coe, Gulsevin Kayihan, Carmen E.R. Delgado, Marina Grau, David Kahn, Frank Brainard and Doris Sommer. The stories from the recipients and pictures of the event can be found on the MACTE's website at www.macte.org. Symposium 2015 - December 4 - 6, Alexandria, VA.

The Symposium materials and pictures will be available on the MACTE website in the New Year.
