UMSON Simulation Labs Receive Accreditation
UMSON's Debra L. Spunt Clinical Simulation Laboratories recently received accreditation in teaching and education from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). UMSON is one of only two simulation laboratories in the Mid-Atlantic region accredited by SSH, an organization that seeks to improve performance and reduce errors in patient care through the use of simulation. Commission on Collegiate Nursing (CCNE) Grants 10-Year Accreditation to UMSON Programs
The CCNE Board of Commissioners recently granted 10-year accreditation to UMSON's Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science, and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs, and the post-graduate APRN certificate program, extending to June 30, 2025. Click here to read more.

UMSON Receives Commitment to Community Award
UMSON was honored with the Paul's Place 2015 Commitment to Community Award at ceremonies held earlier this spring at the Center Club in Baltimore. Paul's Place is a comprehensive community outreach center serving individuals and families throughout Southwest Baltimore. The award is presented annually to those who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to Paul's Place and to the Baltimore community.

Friedmann Named Associate Dean of Research
UMSON Professor Erika Friedmann, PhD, has been named associate dean of research at UMSON. She has served as interim associate dean since November 2014. Click here to read more.

NSGA and CulinArt Cafe Team Up to Provide Lunches for Patrolmen
UMSON's chapter of the Nursing Student Government Association (NSGA), in collaboration with CulinArt Cafe at the Southern Management Corporation Campus Center, showed their appreciation to Maryland State Troopers and members of the National Guard by providing complimentary boxed lunches and coffee to officers and guardsmen patrolling the area around UMSON during the recent time of unrest in Baltimore. The officers were very appreciative of the kind gestures.

Welcome New Faculty and Staff
Randi Barclay, BA, PHR, has joined the Office of Administrative Services as Human Relations Manager. Randi previously served as Director of Human Resources at the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. She also worked as Director of Human Resources at Health Care for the Homeless. Randi holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Virginia and is certified as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR).
Joanna Kozlowski, BS, has joined the Department of Organizational Systems as an Epidemiologist Assistant II. She previously worked at Harbor Boating, Inc. and had an internship at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she assisted the principle investigator with the global obesity prevention program, B'More Health Communities for Kids. Joanna holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Systems Management from the University of Baltimore.
Tonia Sofoluke, BS, has joined the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health as an Epidemiologist Assistant II. Tonia comes to UMSON from Radnet, Inc. Advanced Radiology, where she worked as a patient service representative. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.

RADM Sylvia Trent-Adams, DNP, MS '99, has been recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General to serve as the next Deputy Surgeon General of the U.S. beginning in October 2015. Trent-Adams began her career in the United States Public Health Services (USPHS) in 1992 and is currently serving as the Chief Nurse Office in the USPHS.

Deborah C. Kennedy, MS '84, BSN '79, RN, hospital operations administrator, Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, and Robin Prothro, BSN '79, founding CEO of Komen Maryland, were named to the Daily Record's Circle of Excellence, honoring those who have been named to the Daily Record's Top 100 Women three times. They were honored at the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Top 100 Women Awards, held May 4.

Meg Johantgen, PhD, RN, associate professor and assistant dean for the PhD program, and Kristin Seidl, PhD, RN, assistant professor and director of quality and safety at the University of Maryland Medical Center, presented, "Using Statistical Process Control Charts for Outcome Measurement and Evaluation," at the Maryland Organization of Nurse Executives' spring meeting, held in April. Lyn Murphy, PhD, MBA, RN, associate professor and program director, Health Services Leadership and Management, received the University of Maryland School of Nursing Colleague award from the University of Maryland Medical Center at ceremonies on May 8. Murphy was honored for her professionalism and interaction with colleagues. Barbara Resnick, PhD'96, RN, CRNP, FAAN, FAANP, professor and Sonya Ziporkin Gershowitz Chair in Gerontology, is president-elect of the Gerontological Society of America.
