The Promise of
  

On Jan. 15, Johns Hopkins experts joined alumni, parents and friends in Southern California for an update on the Rising to the Challenge campaign and to discuss the new Individualized Health Initiative.
     

Rising to the Challenge: The Campaign for Johns Hopkins is an effort to raise $4.5 billion, primarily to support students, faculty and research and interdisciplinary solutions to some of humanity's most important problems. The campaign, supporting both Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine, was publicly launched in May 2013 and is targeted for completion in 2017.

Honoring King's Legacy
Portrait Unveiled Of Levi Watkins Jr., M.D., At MLK Commemoration 
A portrait of Levi Watkins Jr., M.D., will hang in The Johns Hopkins Hospital's Nelson lobby and in the Cardiac Surgery Department in the Sheikh Zayed Tower.
Johns Hopkins University Distinguished Service Professor Levi Watkins Jr., M.D., who founded Hopkins' annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration in 1982, was honored with the unveiling of his portrait at this year's Jan. 9 event. 
 

Keynote speaker Morris Dees, a founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center and an advocate for civil rights and tolerance, delivered a timely address on this year's theme: "Tolerance in America: Its Beauty and Challenges." The 33rd anniversary program also featured a video tribute to Maya Angelou, a two-time past speaker; and a salute to eight faculty, staff and students for their outstanding commitment to community service and humanity.  Named The Inaugural Jakurski Family Director

 inaugural recipient of the Jakurski Family Directorship at the Johns Hopkins James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute with benefactors Andre and Maria Jakurski.
 

School of Medicine alumnus Alan W. Partin, M.D. '87, Ph.D '89, has been named the inaugural Jakurski Family Director of the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute. Benefactors Andre and Maria Jakurski traveled all the way from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to attend his installation held Jan. 9 at the David H. Koch Cancer Research Building.

 

A scientist, a surgeon and a distinguished professor, Partin hopes to use the funding from the Jakurski Family Directorship to help advance the future of urologic care. For a decade, he has chaired the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute--which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year!Read more about the institute . . .

Biomedical Careers Initiative (BCI):

  

Working at AbbVie: A Pharma Company with One Mission but Many Careers--Scott Brun, M.D. '93,
and Gary Gordon, M.D. '77, Ph.D. '81, will return to Hopkins to conduct a presentation on the role of the pharmaceutical industry in transforming research to reality via a review of the steps involved in drug research and development. Brun, vice president of pharmaceutical development, and Gordon, vice president of oncology development, both work at AbbvIE, a global biopharmaceutical company based in Chicago. Tuesday, Feb. 17, noon-1 p.m. in the West Reading Room at Welch Library. Lunch will follow. Learn more . . .
