MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

November 1, 2015

From the President...

We have been tabulating the responses to our poll on this question: "Should Mableton Become a City?" To date, 42.1% of you are undecided and want more information, 31.5% of you oppose the idea and 25.8% are in support of cityhood. This is a complicated issue, so it's not surprising that there is a need for additional information. We will be working on that over the coming months. Your comments in the survey have given us very helpful information and guidance.

If you haven't taken the poll, it's still available - click here - and take just a few minutes to tell us what you think.

November and December will be filled with events here in Mableton that will allow for fun and fellowship. We've hit the highlights in this newsletter - and I hope to see you there!

As always, feel free to give me a call or send me an email - I'm always ready to talk about Mableton !

Sincerely,

Help MIC Clean up Mableton
Saturday, November 7th at 9am
Our next Adopt-a-Mile of 2015 will be Saturday, November 7th, starting promptly at
Autobell's Linda Hoynes (second from left) welcomed some of the MIC volunteers in July.
9am. We will meet in the Kroger Shopping Center parking lot adjacent to the Autobell Car Wash on Floyd Road. Autobell will host this event and will provide refreshments for those who "finish the course".

With the added traffic islands since the road project completion, it's a bigger job than before, so your help will be greatly appreciated.  It takes only about an hour for MIC volunteers to pick up the accumulated trash and it's an hour well spent! Floyd Road will look a whole lot better when we are done. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring gloves if you like. We provide latex gloves, safety vests, trash bags, bottled water -- and a warm welcome.

Please contact Dave McDaniel if you plan to participate or if you have any questions..

"Bugsy Malone" to be Presented by The Theatre Project
Friday thru Sunday, November 6th thru 8th
The Theatre Project will present "Bugsy Malone" at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre with its cast of young actors, sponsored by the Mable House Arts Center and the South Cobb Arts Alliance. "Bugsy Malone" tells the story of two gangs comprised completely of children, who square off in a 1920's rivalry. Bugsy Malone, a one-time boxer, is thrust not-so-willingly into the gangster limelight, when all he really wants to do is spend time with his new love. Come see these talented young folks take to the stage for some great family entertainment right here in Mableton. For more information, click here.

Citizen Input Wanted for County Comprehensive Plan
Thursday, November 12th, from 6pm to 8pm
Cobb County staff will host informational and interactive meetings throughout the county for residents, business owners and property owners to kick off the public engagement phase of the 10-year update to the Comprehensive Plan for unincorporated Cobb. The Plan is a long-range growth strategy that will extend the county's growth outlook to 2040. It will help Cobb guide and manage expected population and employment growth and coordinate major public investments in public safety, transportation, community facilities and other important elements.

All meetings and exercises are designed to be easy and fun for all who care about how their community will grow in the future. There will be one meeting in each of the four commission districts, sharing how the 2040 Comprehensive Plan guides the county, as well as providing information about existing conditions. The meeting in Mableton will be Thursday, November 12th from 6pm to 8pm at the South Cobb Community Center, 620 Lions Club Drive in Mableton. Click here for other locations and more information about the Comprehensive Plan.

Help Clean up Nickajack Creek
Saturday, November 14th at 9:30am
MIC is planning our next Adopt A Stream outing on Saturday, November 14th at 9:30am. We will be cleaning up Nickajack Creek in the area which will become the Chattahoochee River Line Park. Volunteers, both adults and students, are encouraged to come and join us. The terrain is beautiful, but it can be slippery, so boots or sturdy shoes with good soles are important. Bring your own gloves, too, and MIC will provide the trash bags.

We will meet in the parking lot of MSC Industrial Supply at 6700 Discovery Boulevard. We have permission to park in the lot at MSC near the bridge on Discovery Boulevard. Past clean-ups have resulted in dozens of bags of trash being retrieved from the creek and prevented from going down the Chattahoochee. We expect this time to be a fun and rewarding as ever. In the event of rain, we will do the cleanup the following day. Contact Ron Raven with any questions. See you there!

Feed the Hungry with H.O.P.E. Family Resource Center
Tuesday, November 17th from 2pm to 7pm

Family Resource Center as they provide a pre-Thanksgiving Day feast for anyone in need wishing to join them at the Mableton Banquet Hall at 6114 Mableton Parkway on Tuesday, November 17th from 2pm to 7pm. Volunteers are still needed and this is a great way to engage your church group, organization, school, business, co-workers and friends in this "feed the hungry" event.

Financial contributions are also welcome; a tax-deductible donation of $25 feeds a family of 6 people.  In addition to a great meal, there will be music, entertainment, give-a-ways and games for the children. Click here to read the flyer and learn more.

Help MIC at Mable's Tea Room
Friday & Saturday, December 4th and 5th
For the last several years, MIC volunteers have "adopted" Mable's Tea Room , Tea Room providing volunteers and homemade cakes and soups for this wonderful Mableton tradition. In return, the South Cobb Arts Alliance , which sponsors the event, makes a donation to MIC. The Tea Room has become an important fundraiser for MIC as well as a chance to serve our friends and neighbors.

MIC is volunteering on December 4th and 5th and it's a lot of fun, so come join us! Many of our volunteers from last year will be returning, but we are always ready to welcome newcomers to this fun event -- and we can always use more cakes and soups, which count towards MIC's fundraising goals. Email J.R. White to volunteer your time and/or your cooking skills, or for more information.

The South Cobb Arts Alliance is also bringing back the popular Mommy & Me Teas this year. They will be held on Sunday, December 6th at 1pm and 3pm. Children and their mothers, aunts, grandmothers and special friends enjoy a light lunch served by their favorite Princesses! Tables seat 4, 6 or 8 and range from $45 to $85. Reservations are required; call 770 819-3265.

Be a Secret Santa for the Girls & Boys Club
Annual MIC Holiday Project
Each year, MIC partners with the A .W. "Tony" Matthews Boys and Girls Club in Mableton to provide Christmas gifts for the children at our local club.  The Secret Santa program helps more than 50 children with their Christmas wishes each holiday season.

MIC members and friends who participate will receive the child's wish list, including favorite toys, clothing sizes and other needs. It is suggested that each sponsor spend approximately $50 per child. If you want to spend more, you can be a Secret Santa for more than one child.

If you would like to be a Secret Santa, please email Janis Stevenson.  We are grateful for the community support in years past and look forward to hearing from you again
Zoning News
Decided in October...
The Board of Commissioners approved a new site plan and landscaping for  Nature's zoning sign small Supply Centre, located at  4419 Floyd Road. MIC had worked with the business owners and their attorney for several months to develop a sound plan for shielding the Silver Comet Trail, Floyd Road, and neighboring homes from views of the business.

The Board of Commissioners approved an expansion of Art Frame, LLC, located at  516 Veterans Memorial Highway (near the intersection with Pebblebrook Road) (Z-59) by approving Light Industrial Zoning on an adjacent parcel. MIC and the Cobblestone Creek subdivision remained neutral on this application because the property owner was willing to make improvements to the entire site that will mitigate the noise and visual impact of this existing business.

The application by JW Homes (OB-46) for a site plan amendment for Providence Subdivision was approved by the Board of Commissioners. Four single family homes will be built, rather than eight townhouses, near Veterans Memorial Highway. MIC worked with the applicant's attorney to gain an agreement that the billboard on the property will be removed within two years and that the rear of the homes, which will face Veterans Memorial, will have attractive architectural features.

Coming up in November...

The Church of the Pentecost USA is requesting rezoning for property located at  5606 Mableton Parkway, the old Wachovia/First Union Bank building. MIC has met with the church leadership and expressed our thoughts about the traffic flow into and out of the property, landscaping plans, and the condition of the parking lots. Additionally, the stand-alone drive-through teller windows need to be demolished.

Coming up in December...

Brilliant Automotive located at 700 Veterans Memorial Highway (SLUP-11) is requesting a continuation of their Special Land Use Permit for Used Car Sales, which expired on October 15, 2015.
