Greetings, and a Hearty Semi-Farewell .......

For almost 6 years I have had the honor and privilege of serving as dean of the School of Math and Sciences. There have been many changes and additions to our programs over that time, but one thing has not changed - the dedication of our faculty to the well being of our students and to the mission of the university. I have said this many times in many venues - I have never worked with a finer group of educators, nor have I ever worked for a better institution than Wayland.

Over the past several months, Dr. Scott Franklin, Dr. Bill Hahn, Megan McPherson, and I have been assembling a program review in which we documented the accomplishments of the school over the past 4 or 5 years. Our findings are impressive! Read more...
Natural Blogarithms - The Dean's Corner

"I'm coming home...to the place where I belong!"

I actually remember it vividly, the spring of 1994, when I first walked onto the Wayland campus pondering the possibility of attending school here as an undergraduate....

It would be unfathomable to that younger version of me that somewhere down the road, I would be settling into the position of dean of this very school.

As I begin the transition into the leadership of the School of Mathematics and Sciences, I am looking forward to many new adventures, but most of all a continuation of what has made this school great: a mission to provide an academically challenging, learning-focused and distinctively Christian environment for professional success and service to God and humankind

Ph.D. in Chemistry,  Texas A&M University, 2014

The School of Mathematics and Sciences is proud to announce the major accomplishment of our alumnus, Stephanie Skiles. She has recently completed her doctorate in December 2014 from Texas A&M University having defended her dissertation in October 2014 entitled Chemical and Physical Properties of Nanomaterials for Model Catalytic Systems and Smart Polymer Membranes. She is currently teaching at A&M in College Station as a Chemistry Lecturer in the First Year Program. She's teaching a mixture of lecture and laboratory courses, with the enrollment in her lecture course topping out at 250 students.

Mariya Essani taking Summer Courses at Au Sable, 2015.

Mariya Essani will be our first student to take summer courses at Au Sable this summer.  Perhaps even more important, she is one of 2 recipients this year of the Harold Snyder Fellowship at Au Sable.  This fellowship is one of the top 2 financial scholarship awards the institute gives each year.  It is an incredible honor for Mariya and us.  She competed with students from top Christian universities all over the country.

Spring Research Day
April 24, 2015

The student research conference will be held on the first floor of the Moody Science Building. The conference will conclude with a complimentary dinner for all participants, with an awards ceremony honoring top presentations. There will be cash awards for the Outstanding Talk and the Outstanding Poster, as decided by a panel of faculty judges. There will also be a students' choice award for each category.

Texas Academy of Science

The School of Mathematics & Sciences had 17 students and 6 faculty sponsors participate in the Texas Academy Science (TAS) Meeting in San Antonio on March 5-8.  There were a dozen universities from across Texas represented and Wayland was in the top five in terms of numbers of participants and contributors.  Our students presented five oral presentations and four research posters across categories of Neuroscience, Biomedical Research, Cell and Molecular Biology, Chemistry &  Biochemistry, and Geosciences.

Notably, we had three students win awards at the reception and banquet following the event:

-          Evan McElwain won the outstanding oral presentation in Cell & Molecular Biology.

-          Kaylee Lawrence won the outstanding poster presentation in Geosciences

-          Catherine Wiechman won 2nd place in the Research Grant Award, receiving $1500 to support her research.

Other students attending whose research was presented at the meeting include Ashley Rivera, Melissa Perez, Sharon Robinson, Whitney Phillips, Sarah Kelly, Jessica Kenneson, Tim McCutcheon, Trudi Cooke, and Jake Brozek.

We're VERY PROUD of our students for their achievements!
