Participant Counter

Our goal is to reach 750 participants this year.

From January through May

we reached 365 women

(49% of our goal for 2014)

From our Partner:

Research Participants Wanted

Accidental bowel leakage (ABL) is the accidental passing of stool or mucus. ABL affects 1 in 5 women over 45 years old. In addition to its negative impact on quality of life, it is expensive and significantly increases the risk of nursing home referral.  But over 70% of women with ABL do not talk to a healthcare provider about it.

Researchers at UW are interested in understanding the reasons women may not talk with a healthcare provider about ABL. Women with ABL can earn $50 for participating in a focus group or one-on-one interview with UW researchers about this topic.

Please email [email protected] or call (608) 265-5664 to learn more.

Participant Comments from May Sessions

If you learned something new, what was it? 05/16/14 (Women's Bone Health) - "Teen years are big bone-building years, so keeping my kids active will help them later on."

Have you taken any action or made any changes to help others who need assistance or resources related to Dementia?  05/17/14  (Healthy Aging Brain) "I have shared this information with others and encouraged them to use their brain muscle."

Health Information

Diabetes/Prediabetes on the Rise - According to the National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2014 released last month by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 29.1 million people in the US have diabetes. One in four people don't know they have it. Another 86 million adults (more than one in three) have prediabetes, meaning their blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as Type 2 diabetes. Without weight loss and moderate physical activity, 15-30 percent of those with prediabetes will develop Type 2 diabetes within five years. Seems like the timing for our new unit is perfect.

WI Cervical Cancer Data Released The Department of Health Services (DHS) has released a new article in the Wisconsin Cancer Data Bulletin series: "Cervical Cancer in Wisconsin." This updated report is based on data from the Wisconsin Cancer Reporting System and national sources. Click here to visit the new cervical cancer bulletin.

Preventing Antibiotic Resistance - Some of the bacteria that cause infections in humans have become resistant to the antibiotics we use to combat them. Antibiotic resistance can turn once-manageable infections into "superbug" diseases that are difficult-and sometimes impossible-to treat. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the United States alone, at least 2 million people each year develop serious infections with drug-resistant bacteria.  Check out this article.

Fruit and Veggies - More Matters Month - We all know that fruits and vegetables are good for us and the fruits & veggies more matters website has a lot of information on how to eat more fruits and vegetables, shopping tips, meal planning and recipes. The US Department of Health and Human Services also has a toolkit.

Healthy Aging MonthHealthy Aging was created to focus on the positive parts of aging and provide inspiration for individuals over 45 to improve their physical, mental, social and financial health.

Atrial Fibrillation (Afib) is the most common irregular heartbeat. Symptoms include heart palpitations, dizziness, and shortness of breath. Afib can lead to stroke, heart failure, and Alzheimer's disease, and can double your risk of death.

National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month - Obesity rates in the US have soared among all age groups, including our children. The increase of childhood obesity puts nearly one third of children at early risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke - conditions usually associated with adulthood.  Even greater disparities exist among young Hispanics and children of color. The US Department of Health and Human Services has a toolkit.

National Food Safety Education Month - One out of six people in America get sick every year because of foodbourne illnesses. With all of the picnics and outdoor grilling this summer, now is the perfect time to check out this article on summer food safety.

National ITP Awareness Month - Immune Thrombocytopenica (ITP) is a blood disorder in which the immune system attacks the body's platelets, the function responsible for clotting. National Recovery Month - This year's theme, "Join the Voices for Recovery: Speak Up, Reach Out," encourages people to openly speak up about mental and substance use disorders and the reality of recovery, and promotes ways individuals can use to recognize behavioral health issues and reach out for help. Recovery Month spreads a positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.

National Sickle Cell Month - Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder, characterized primarily by chronic anemia and periodic episodes of pain.  The underlying problem involves hemoglobin, a component of the red cells in the blood. In Sickle Cell Disease the hemoglobin is defective. Sickle Cell Disease can ultimately damage the tissues and vital organs and lead to other serious medical problems.
