450 AND COUNTING
The Largest Class in MCC History is Underway

Spring ushers in many things in Big Sky Country. The valleys radiate green, snow still adorns many high peaks, and rivers rush forward with a force that literally shakes the ground. Much like a river, our crews also pack incredible force. Their activities will shape mountains as they move tons of sediment and rock and shake the ground with every heave of their picks. Over 450 members of Montana Conservation Corps will be on the ground this season, our largest class to date, helping to keep our public places majestic. In this edition of e-news, we're celebrating the things that are helping make this one of the most influential seasons in our nearly 25-year history.

Tools for the Toolbox: The Tidwells

"All of the sudden he started givin' me the chicken eye."

To someone outside of MCC,
this statement seems like the sort of one-liner that was passed down from dust-covered ranch hands corralled around a late night campfire. In the case of Wilderness Advanced First Aid trainers Bill and Louise Tidwell, this kind of talk is their trademark blend of down-home quirks and a serious commitment to teaching medicine.

MCC ALUM REJOINS AS PROGRAM MANAGER

What do business marketing, building oyster reefs, and Butler University all have in common? Other than an interesting alliteration, probably not much. But if you take a look around at the new faces on MCC's staff, these three things point to one person: Andrea Walker. Walker started her trek in national service with the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) after studying business marketing at Butler.

PHILANTHROPY HELPS MCC GROW
Ideally, every Montana child would have carefree summers filled with sports camps, fort building, and nature exploration. Unfortunately, many youth face everything but idyllic summer months. When school doors close, many Montana children struggle to access educational opportunities and basic needs such as healthy meals and adequate adult supervision. More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities. This is just one reason why MCC launched its month-long Expeditions for teens nearly 15 years ago.

ALUMNI COUNCIL AND THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY

We're excited to announce three new additions to the Alumni Advisory Council. Paul Paradis (Field Crew Leader, 2001), Alex Villalta (Veterans Green Corps, 2011), and Claire Muller (Field Crew Leader, 2011) join the council as it undertakes initiatives like creating a mentorship program and prepping for the 25th anniversary of MCC. We're excited to see the great things they'll accomplish during their terms!

And with the 25th anniversary only a year out, the planning process is already underway. Since you've helped us get this far, we'd love for you to help us celebrate in style. We've put together a brief survey on activities we could undertake to commemorate the event. You may also submit any additional thoughts to [email protected]!
