From ReServe's Director:

Fall marks the forward season, but  ReServe has kept up its forward pace for a busy and fruitful summer. Our July Partner Breakfast hosted 18 prospective nonprofit Partners, generating exciting new opportunities for our pool of talented ReServists.

We continue to make inroads with special programs, including the Senior Summer of Service project in West Harlem and MS ExTRA, delivering additional opportunities for ReServists to put their unique skills, talents, and experience to work.

With this year's fall season, ReServe will celebrate its milestone Tenth Anniversary with a summit at Fordham University's vibrant Lincoln Center campus. The Summit will take a look at ReServe's accomplishments and impact over the past 10 years with the goal of informing practice and policy for a new generation of older adults. More details to come on the Summit.  In the interim, plans continue  for the very next of our "buzz"-generating and always well-attended ReServEd Lecture Series.  Our October program is about the multi-generational workforce and will feature a father/son duo representing the millennials and boomers.  In November, we'll have a visit from Marcos Salazar, founder of BeSocialChange.org who will share an exciting benefit for ReServists. More details below and I hope to see you at one of our events!

Sincerely,

Laura Traynor

Institute of Retired Professionals
Tell Your Story ... and Win Tickets to De Niro's New Film

"Experience never gets old," the saying goes, and ReServists know this better than most.  You've gone through retirement, but you wanted to   give back to the community rather than lay back on your laurels. Or, you've faced "downsizing," "restructuring," and "economic shifting," and wanted a fair shot as an older professional to get back in the game.

ReServe has helped you get back in the game - and make a difference. As ReServists, you've got powerful stories to tell. We want to hear them.

We are collecting stories of ReServist experiences for events and publications to mark ReServe's 10-year anniversary.  The first four ReServists who send us a story of their experience (three short paragraphs or less, please!) will win free tickets to see The Intern, Robert De Niro's new and much talked-about film. The Intern focuses on - what else? - an older professional seizing the opportunity to return to work as an intern and make a difference far beyond what anyone could have imagined. That's what ReServists do: powering transformative change in their communities. That's your story.

So help us tell that story in your own words and experiences - and in three short paragraphs or less,  click here.

Our friends at Encore.org are also collecting stories about impact in education for its second "Story Slam" - a social media-driven campaign.  Encore would like to showcase stories from ReServists helping youth and their families succeed (middle school to college). Anyone whose work impacts directly or indirectly the future of the next generation is eligible. Click here to share your story.

Jonathan & Harrison Kendall, #SucceedFast & #PopUpSelling

It's a whole new workplace. You have started an assignment and you have a 25-year old supervisor, an 80-year-old co-worker, and a 50-year-old board chair. How often have you found yourself working with a team of Boomers? of Millennials?  Do you find yourself struggling to get your ideas across?  Or feel that you just don't fit in?  If so, this ReServED lecture is for you!

In a lively and entertaining format, our presenters will offer new ideas and approaches to "selling" your ideas and experience as well as insight into upgrading and sharpening communications skills. We'll hear from a father (Boomer) and son (Millennial) team lecturing across the country on multi generational communications as well as a leading expert on the aging workforce.  Boomers and Millennials will provide fresh approaches to understanding how good communications work -- and how you can implement them in your workplace to see tasks to successful completion and meet everyone's goals to their satisfaction.

New Pilot Program  Supports Youth in Transition

ReServe's Success Mentors (from lef) Michele Pellar, Yolanda Moss and Alyce Smith
Three ReServists spent their summer supporting the goals of a pilot program designed to help youth transitioning from foster care develop the skills needed for a career in civil service. Twenty-one young adults graduated from the program in September with three "graduates" having already passed a civil service exam.  By all accounts, the pilot was a win-win all around.

"I learned so much about myself and these young adults," said Success Mentor Michele Pellar. "This was an exceptional group of young adults - intelligent, engaging and focused.  They didn't use their past as a crutch. It was a profound experience - I was very touched by them."

The pilot was transformative for the young adults as well.  "Being in foster care is so difficult, so being part of a community is really important," remarked one young participant.  "I want to be a lawyer and because of this program, I know the pathway."

The NYC Administration for Child Services conducted the pilot to direct youth transitioning from foster care toward a path of self-sufficiency through a collaborative pathways program, designed to prepare young adults to take and pass civil service exams and gain stable employment in NYC. ReServe Success Mentors joined the program to facilitate weekly group discussions, helping participants understand their core values, improve their decision-making and problem-solving skills, and develop greater self-confidence. Notably, one of the Success Mentors, Yolanda Moss, was able to share her own experience as a retired civil service employee and attest to the benefit of job security.

Plans are underway to keep the young adults on their civil service pathways, and our ReServe Success Mentors stand ready to support them in reaching their goals!
