Take Action Today: AB 1240 Heading to the Assembly Education Committee!

AB 1240 Press Conference: Bill Introduction
AB 1240 Press Conference:
Bill Introduction
AB 1240 (Bonta & Thurmond) the Breakfast After the Bell bill will be heard in the Assembly Education Committee on Wednesday, April 22 at 1:30pm.

The bill calls for practical changes that would improve access to school breakfast on thousands of campuses across the state, ensuring that more California kids are prepared to learn, grow, and achieve each school day. AB 1240 takes a bold step to accelerate academic success, revitalize the severely under-utilized school breakfast program, and more effectively manage existing funds.

You can watch the committee hearing live on CalChannel. link

We encourage individuals and organizations to send Assemblymembers Bonta and Thurmond a letter in support of AB 1240. You can use the sample letter below or write your own letter in support of AB 1240.

Please submit your letter by Wednesday, April 15.

AB 1240 Field Poll Results Show Strong and Wide Support for Breakfast After the Bell

According to a newly released statewide poll, two-thirds of California voters support legislation requiring schools to integrate breakfast into the school day. Support was strong among all voters, regardless of ethnicity, age, gender or geography.

The poll showed that 77 percent of California voters believe what recent academic studies have shown, that school breakfast positively impacts academic achievement. 78 percent said they strongly favored using existing federal funding to ensure that more students start their day with breakfast.

CFPA is sponsoring AB 1240 (Bonta & Thurmond) which would increase access to school breakfast and improve academic achievement statewide by implementing many of the changes strongly supported in this Field Poll.

Take Action: One Week Left to Comment on the Proposed CACFP Meal Pattern!

CFPA has developed two different sample letters that can be personalized and submitted to USDA. One sample letter is brief and intended for the general public; the second sample letter is longer and better fit for organizations.

  • Download the simple sample comment letter. doc
  • Download the long sample comment letter. doc
  • Learn more about the proposed changes to the CACFP. link

CFPA has scrutinized the proposed changes, interviewed a variety of stakeholders, and participated in several work groups to better understand the impact and implications of the proposed changes. We hope these sample letters will help you submit comments on a meal pattern that has not seen significant changes in over 40 years.

California Ends CalFresh Drug Felon Ban!

As of Wednesday, April 1, 2015 the lifetime ban on receiving CalFresh for people with a drug related felony offense has been repealed. If all other conditions of eligibility are met, previously ineligible individuals can now begin receiving benefits or can be added to an existing CalFresh household.

The lifetime ban on receiving CalFresh for people with drug-related felony offenses has been in place across California since 1996. Only 11 states currently maintain the full lifetime ban for any type of felony drug offense. Advocates across California have attempted to eliminate the ban every legislative session since 1998. Great credit goes to the hundreds of advocates across the State who maintained a consistent advocacy drumbeat throughout the years! Thousands of Californians will now receive nutrition benefits that are critical in preventing food insecurity and hunger.
