Because of the elevated place given to romantic love in our culture, it can be difficult for those who aren't in a romantic relationship (whether for circumstantial or principled reasons) to feel that a life of giving and receiving love is open to them in the same way it is to married couples. Gay and lesbian Christians may feel this lack especially keenly, since - current legislative debates notwithstanding - their friendships and loves are not often recognized as enduring and meaningful in the way same straight relationships area. In an effort to help the church engage with these questions and areas of concern, Wesley Hill will discuss the Christian tradition of 'spiritual friendship' and some ways we might begin to revive and recover that tradition in today's church.

Wesley Hill is an assistant professor of New Testament at Trinity School for Ministry and the author of Washed and Waiting: Reflections on Christian Faithfulness and Homosexuality. In 2015, he is contributing to a book on St. Paul and the Trinity, as well as publishing the book on the topic about which he joins us, Spiritual Friendship: Finding Love in the Church as a Celibate Gay Christian.
