PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: A MONEY-SAVING OPTION

With the price of gasoline creeping up again, commuters can save big bucks by using public transportation.

Every month, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) releases a Transit Savings Report which shows how much a person can save on a monthly and yearly basis by taking public transit.

In Honolulu, individuals who ride public transportation instead of driving can save more than $12,000 per year.

    City             Monthly   Annual
1 New York    $1,348        $16,172

2 San Francisco  $1,235   $14,819

3 Boston         $1,189        $14,267

4 Chicago      $1,113        $13,359

5 Philadelphia   $1,112    $13,348

6 Seattle     $1,101         $13,208

7 Los Angeles  $1,089   $13,070

8 Honolulu     $1,072        $12,859

9 San Diego   $1,041     $12,496

10 Portland $1,000         $11,998

APTA determines the cost of the average monthly transit pass and compares it with the costs of driving, including gas, maintenance, tires, insurance, registration and parking fees.

As you can see, living with one less car can save you money.  And when you ride rail transit in the future, you'll be able to read, check your emails and leave the driving behind.
