Ex-IITians develop social networking site in Hindi

Abhinav Malhotra | Jan 25, 2015, 03.09 AM IST

Almost 11 years back in February 2004 when Facebook was launched by its founder Mark Zeckerberg from Harvard dormitory (Harvard University's hostel), nobody knew that the social networking site would become a giant, connecting millions of people across the world. Taking inspiration from Zuckerberg, Amitesh Mishra, an ex-student of IIT Bombay and a resident of Geeta Nagar in the city and his around 10 teammates developed a social networking site called Shabdanagari, providing users an interface in Hindi. Shabdanagari.in offers blogging, making website and other multiple options but all strictly in Hindi. The website was launched here by former registrar of IIT-K Giriraj Kishore on Saturday.

The developers of the website termed it to be the first social networking site in Hindi.

It is not known how many money was spent in raising Facebook but about Rs 25 lakhs were incurred in developing Shabdanagari.in. This fund was provided by SIDBI Innovation and Incubation Centre (SIIC) of IIT-K to Trident Analytical Solutions Pvt Limited which runs Shabdanagari. Trident was incubated in 2012 in IIT-K. Amitesh, who is one of the directorsin the company, informed TOI that while website www.Shabdanagari.in was developed in past one year, it has around 1,000 users now.

Jhimli Mukherjee Pandey, TNN | Feb 10, 2015, 12.48AM IST

KOLKATA: If the ambitious Barnaparichay project has remained stuck in the doldrums, don't lose heart yet. A couple of architecture students of IIT-Kharagpur have come up with a 'rejuvenation plan' for a 300-metre stretch of one of the city's most loved icons: Boipara, aka College Street.

As things stand now, the future of Boipara as envisaged by the IIT students - green tram tracks on both sides of College Street, a no-traffic zone, adda zones equipped with book and food kiosks - might be more in the realm of high fantasy, but could well become non-fiction.

IIT-BHU graduates develop tech for safer, faster tyres

PunkhuriKapoor,TNN | Feb 12, 2015, 06.21 PM IST

VARANASI: Three chemical engineering graduates of the Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU) have come up with a new eco-friendly innovation of extracting green silica from rice husk ash. With this, the carbon used in tyres can be replaced with silica which helps in reducing the rolling resistance and improve fuel economy.

Elaborating about their innovation Nikhar Jain said, "The rice husk ash contains heavy amount of silica which can be used for various purpose. To ensure effective rice husk utilization through efficient silica extraction, we developed a process to extract advance grade of green silica."

Citing advantages, he said, "First and foremost, the cost will be cheaper as no import will be required. Secondly, silica helps in reducing the rolling resistance so if it is used instead of carbon black then the fuel economy too will improve." It also results in 5% reduction in fuel consumption of vehicles and reduction in emission of green house gases, he added.
