Bold Steps for Children Newsletter
MARCH 2015

On Wednesday, February 25th, more than 250 community leaders and others who care about children and youth came together at the Eighth Annual Children's Summit held at Microsoft. Many thanks to those of you who attended, presented, or in some other way helped to make the Children's Summit a success.

At the Summit, we celebrated Juvenile Justice Systems Partners and presented them with the Bold Steps for Children Award for their contribution to some amazing results for youth engaged in the juvenile justice system. Here are some of the stats:
  • Total juvenile arrests in Santa Clara County decreased 52.4% from 14,663 youth arrested in 2008 to 6,214 youth arrested in 2014.
  • On March 31, 2009, there were 304 youth in Juvenile Hall. On December 1, 2014, the number was 97 youth in Juvenile Hall.
  • While there is still over-representation of Latino and African American youth in our juvenile justice system, there has been a significant decrease in the number of these youth who have been cited or detained in Juvenile Hall:
    • 778 Latino youth were cited or detained in June 2009. This number decreased 65% to 269 youth in November 2014.
    • 86 African American youth were cited or detained in June 2009. This number decreased 60% to 33 youth in November 2014.
La Raza Roundtable, NAACP, SV Debug, County Office of Education, SVCN, Juvenile Court, County Departments of Probation, Social Services, Mental Health, Public Defender, District Attorney SJ Police Department, LACY, East San Joe Union High School District, SJSU College of Education, Mayor's Gang Prevention Taskforce, and others were part of the award recipients this year. To learn more about their collective impact effort, you can watch the Bold Steps for Children Award Video by clicking here.

We hope to have the presentations from the Summit on our website within the next couple of weeks.  We will also be offering some Spring workshops, and those will be on our website soon.

Have a wonderful March!

Featuring: THE BEAT WITHIN
A Piece from Their Award-Winning Publication

In this March newsletter, we continue to feature The Beat Within, a San Francisco-based non-profit that has been committed since 1996 to providing incarcerated youth in the Santa Clara County Juvenile Justice system with a weekly writing and conversation workshop. Below is another piece written by an incarcerated youth that was featured in their award-winning publication, The Beat Within.

Window
When I look out the window, I see the world I was once in.
A sadness appears as I feel a tear running down my chin.
I see trees being blown by the wind as they rock back and forth,
And look back on my life as I took the wrong course.
I see birds fly free in the sky,
While I'm in a cell wondering why.
I see the clouds develop while the rain starts pouring down.
I'm wishing that my physical being was free instead of being bound.
I see the weather change as it goes from hot to cold,
Confined in a place as I grow old.
I see buildings, houses and even cars as they drive by.
It's hard to stop stressing, but at least I try.
I see the street lights come on when night appears,
Trying to focus on my freedom but it isn't clear.
I see myself wondering, "Is it over for me?"
While I'm looking out the window from inside the penitentiary,
I ask myself why.
-Nightmare

Kaiser Permanente Child Health Program
Did you know that Kaiser Permanente in California insures low-income children who are not eligible for Medi-Cal or Covered California through its Child Health Program? With all of the confusion surrounding the Affordable Care Act (ACA), many mixed status and immigrant families do not know that the program is an option for their children. The Child Health Program is pleased to offer a quality option in California that gives children the healthcare they need for just $0, $10, or $20 per child, per month, for up to three children, depending on the family's income. Additional children are covered at no extra premium. There are also no co-pays (no charge) for services at Kaiser Permanente facilities.
For More Information:
Send email to Sarah Hurd at [email protected]. You can also get additional details, including eligibility guidelines and how to apply, by clicking here.
