o honor World Autism Awareness Month, the Westland City hall will be lit in blue for the entire month of April.
On April 2nd, World Autism Awareness Day, Westland City Hall will flip the switch to take part in "Light it Up Blue: and shine a bright spotlight on autism, a complex, life altering, developmental disorder affective more than 1.5 million Americans. Light it Up Blue is an international campaign of the advocacy group Autism Speaks that urges prominent landmarks around the world to turn their lights blue in April. With the illumination of Westland City Hall, Mayor William R. Wild will be honoring the millions of families facing the challenges of autism. "I'm proud that we can light City Hall in blue to raise awareness of the families who need our support and recognize the impact that Autism Speaks is making in the lives of children with autism," said Mayor William R. Wild. According to Autism Speaks, more than 1000 structures in over 180 U.S. Cities and 30 countries will join them to shine a bright light on autism. The public can actively participate in Light it Up Blue (LIUB) by supporting the campaign virtually by downloading the LIUB iPhone App. The app is available at the iTunes Store and allows users to become a part of this global intiaitve by turning their own pictures blue. Users are encouragd to upload their photos to the live stream on LightItUpBlue.org. In an effort to help raise much needed funds for research, participants can also Build a Blue Website and ask friends and family to support Autism Speaks by making a donation to their personal page.
