SAYING YES TO MARY

"Somehow I have to trust that God is at work in me and that the way

I am being moved to new inner and outer places is part of a larger movement of which I am only a very small part."

                  ~ Henri Nouwen

This Sunday we will seek to "taste and see" the experience of Mary. Scripture describes her as being "much perplexed" when the angel Gabriel comes to her with news that she is a "favored one" and that the presence of God is with her.

In considering her own life, perhaps all she could see was insignificance. Nazareth, her home town, was far from the center of power. Why would a powerful God choose a powerless place and powerless person for divine revelation? Many continue to reflect on that question today. Mary, however, while acknowledging her confusion, landed in a place of trust saying, "Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word" (Luke 1:38).

Mary trusted that God was at work in her. Mary opened herself to "being moved to new inner and outer places" (Henri Nouwen). At the time, she could not see the bigger picture or the larger movement. Yet she said yes and risked everything. She became part of the unfolding story of salvation that continues to unfold today.

We too are invited into the unfolding story. The story continues to unfold through us each time we say yes to becoming a part of God's love in the world.

I invite you to join me this Sunday at 9 & 11 for the Second Sunday of Advent as Ministry Intern Tom Simmons further explores our scripture from Luke 1: 26-38. Tom has shared his gifts with MCCDC for the past year through his prayerful and joyful presence. His special ministry has been ministering with MCCDC Unid@s. In addition, he has facilitated numerous Tuesday Night Bible Studies, enjoyed fellowship with the Older Adults Ministry, attended Board Meetings and much more. Don't miss his special message this Sunday and our opportunity to thank him as he completes his ministry with us.

This is a great weekend at MCCDC. I look forwarding to seeing you at the Christmas Concert on Friday & Saturday nights and then at worship on Sunday!

Faithfully,

HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Please join local healing and therapeutic practitioner

Elizabeth McCain in a three week series on holiday hope and hopefulness.

The holiday season can be a difficult time of year for many of us. No matter what kind of painful past memories we have, we can choose to embrace a sense of hope and a more positive attitude during this time of year and beyond. In these sessions, learn how to reframe stories from the past, experience a body/mind/spirit connection through acupressure and energy healing, develop spiritual practices (such as meditation and gratitude practices), and feel a sense of belonging and joy within yourself, your family, and your community.

Rev. Elizabeth McCain is an interfaith minister, grief counselor, spiritual mentor, energy healer, and professional storyteller in Takoma Park, Md. Whether ministering, counseling, or performing, she believes that sharing and reframing our personal stories heals hearts, creates community, and changes the world. Elizabeth specializes in helping the LGBTQ community and our allies live more meaningful and joyful lives. To learn more about her work, go to www.elizabethmccain.com.

Dates: Dec 4, 11, 18

Time: 7-8:30

Location: MCCDC

Workshop is free and donations are appreciated.

MCC STATEMENT

OF FAITH REPORT

The report presents the results of the first round of surveys developed by the Commission on the MCC Statement of Faith. Along with feedback forms on the MCC denominational website, the surveys were launched with the intention of initiating a grass-roots dialogue with the various constituencies of MCC as we begin our task: to review, renew, and update our MCC Statement of Faith as authorized by the 2013 General Conference.

SHARE the GIFT OF FOOD

During the holiday season MCCDC is requested to provide food baskets to our neighbors who are in need. Three weeks of food can be purchased for $23-30. Often, we have more requests for baskets than purchases will allow. This year we would like to make you aware and provide an opportunity for you to fund a SHARE basket. A second offering will be received on Sunday December 14th to support SHARE and you may also go on line to make a donation. Please consider providing the gift of food this holiday season.

APPLY TO BE A WHITE HOUSE FELLOW
Applications are now open to be a 2015-2016 White House Fellow. Applications will be open until January 15, 2015 -- please help us spread the word! President Lyndon B. Johnson established the President's Commission on White House Fellowships 50 years ago, and over the course of nine presidential administrations -- four Democrat and five Republican -- the nonpartisan White House Fellows program has become the na...tion's premier fellowship for public service and leadership. The program's mission is to expose Fellows to first-hand, high-level experience in the federal government.

The program consists of a full-time work placement in the offices of Cabinet Secretaries, senior White House staff, and other high-ranking Administration officials. During their year in Washington, D.C., White House Fellows also participate in a robust education program designed to provide a behind-the-scenes look into the inner workings of the federal government. It is an extraordinary year that yields a lifetime of rewards.
