Of Note

It's Literacy Week! The seventh annual Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! will be held January 26-30, 2015. This weeklong, statewide event is held each year to promote the importance of literacy. This year's theme "Reading Accelerates Success" reminds us, shared book reading experiences have a special role in fostering early literacy development and a love of reading critical to further academic success. Research shows that less than half (48%) of young children in the U.S. are read to daily.

Creative Loafing: The Arts Economy: Paint by Numbers

With its recent profusion of murals, downtown St. Pete seems to have a level of vibrance that wasn't there in, say, 2007.

Something about these works, done by muralists like Sebastian Coolidge, Bask and Jennifer Kosharek, makes the place seem more alive than it once was. They're the visual equivalents of the music spilling out onto the streets from countless downtown venues every Saturday night.

TIME Magazine: The One Benefit All Millennials Should Consider Before Accepting a Job

While taking unpaid time has some big financial implications for you, going back to work too soon has serious drawbacks too. "That initial time to bond with your child, you don't get that back," says St. Pete mayor Rick Kriseman who recently expanded paid leave to city employees.
