Becoming 2014 The Commons Blog
May 2015

A few months ago our parents and alumni received a request on behalf of Head of School Ward Ghory regarding input on Harley's new mission statement. After collecting many ideas and input, below is The Harley School Mission:

Take a read and let us know what you think and if you believe this mission represents your time at Harley.

Andrew Rea '05 was an editor for this film, featured at the recent TriBeca Film Festival. Click the image to watch a preview.

We Live This is a short documentary profiling the day-to-day lives of the eponymous subway break-dancing troupe. These young men endure the perils of dancing on a moving train, the jaded stares of New Yorkers, and the NYPD's crackdown, all in pursuit of perfecting an EmpireCity mainstay. With the dollars and coins coffered into overturned hats, they narrowly avoid the drugs, homelessness, and violence synonymous with living in the projects. As recent litigation threatens to eradicate this controversial New York City tradition, the boys hop turnstiles and dodge police while they still can, sharing their unique talent with entranced or annoyed subway passengers.

We Live This was directed by James Burns, an emerging documentary filmmaker. It was co-edited by Andrew Rea '05, a Rochester native, and Andrew Baris, the film's cinematographer. The film was an official 2015 TriBeca Film Festival selection, featured as part of the "Daily Grind" short documentary series, detailing the day-to-day struggles and triumphs of New York City natives. This is the second collaboration between James Burns and Rea, who are currently finishing post-production on a documentary feature about three ex-convicts and their struggles dealing with life after prison.
