Today marks the end of Global Entrepreneurship Week, a world-wide celebration of entrepreneurial activity. Recently, President Obama proclaimed November to be National Entrepreneurship Month. Here in the Sunshine City, we have celebrated our entrepreneur ecosystem all week as an essential part of making St. Pete a city of opportunity.

10 News: St. Pete works to include Uber, Lyft

 

Ride-sharing services are taking cities by storm and hitting roadblocks. Many cities say companies such as Uber and Lyft are operating outside of vehicle-for-hire regulations. 


St. Petersburg is working to change its ordinance to include Uber and Lyft and give consumers the choice of transportation.

St. Petersburg Tribune: Assistant police chief DeKay to retire after decades serving St. Pete

 

Exactly 32 years after he was sworn in at the St. Petersburg Police Department, Assistant Chief of Investigative Services Bureau David DeKay is retiring.

 
"It's been an interesting time," DeKay said in the week leading up to his retirement. He will be replaced by James Previtera, who is coming over from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. 


DeKay recently served as interim police chief at the request of Mayor Rick Kriseman after Chuck Harmon left and before Chief Anthony Holloway was hired out of Clearwater earlier this year.

Tampa Bay Times: Plan advances to protect Boyd Hill Nature Preserve

 

A big chunk of habitat for rare plants and animals within Boyd Hill Nature Preserve took a step toward permanent preservation status on Tuesday. 


The city's Community Planning and Preservation Commission signed off on a land-use change to further protect an area of the city recently eyed by developers.

Tampa Bay Times: Kriseman warns new tourist tax formula could hamper upgrades to city sports facilities

 

Overhauls of Al Lang Stadium and the Walter Fuller Baseball Complex might not get as much tourist tax money as St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman wants if the Pinellas County Commission adopts a measure approved Wednesday by the Tourist Development Council. 

 

The council voted to recommend that the nearly $7 million a year now used to pay off the main construction bonds on Tropicana Field be restricted when they expire in 2015. Under a new formula for disbursing the money, the TDC would allow either $4.5 million for new capital projects or the proceeds from three-fourths of a centwhichever amount is greater.  [Read full article]
