In the City of St. Petersburg we believe education is the entire community's responsibility and together, one child at a time, we can make a difference. The employees of the City of St. Petersburg have a proud tradition of supporting the children in our community who attend our public schools. Over more than a decade, their generous gifts to our city's payroll giving program have meant that hundreds of deserving, at-risk children have received the promise of a college or technical education through the Pinellas Education Foundation's Take Stock in Children Program. Many of our employees also give generously of their time as they visit our schools each week to serve as mentors. Dozens of our community's businesses have stepped forward to partner with our schools, providing classroom grants, mentors, scholarships, and other resources so urgently needed by our schools.

This summer our City of St. Petersburg employees are continuing that tradition as they enroll in our payroll giving program and sign up as mentors for the upcoming school year, but with the help of our entire community there is so much more we can do. Please join us by giving to the Pinellas Education Foundation's Take Stock in Children Program, volunteering to mentor a child, and if you represent a business please consider partnering with a school. Help us change lives, and through the experience you may even change your own.

An Apology to Mayor Kriseman

I owe St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman an apology.

Some of you may recall that shortly after St. Petersburg voters chose Kriseman as the 'burg's new mayor, I threw down the gauntlet and publicly suggested the mayor needed to get in touch with Midtown, the 49th Street Corridor, and Child's Park, collectively known (by me) as "the South Side." I cockily suggested he and I take a bike ride through some of the town's poor black areas so he could see whom he represented.

Eric Rachany is trying to count how many times he's played St. Petersburg.

"Oh, man," says the singer of Santa Barbara, Calif. Group Rebelution. "I'd say, like, 15 times, maybe?"

Tampa Bay Times: St. Pete Pride weekend holds many 'firsts'

For the first time, St. Pete Pride is moving its popular parade out of the blistering heat and placing it in the streets of Grand Central after sunset this year.

A rainbow flag will be flown in front of City Hall for most of the weekend, and the mayor himself will attend the June 28 parade.
