February 2014

February's Financial Tip:  It's still worth making an RRSP Contribution.  With so many options to consider, Tax Free Savings accounts, RRSP's  and both Federal and Provincial governments speaking about how to help implement additional retirement savings pools, why should you invest in your RRSP?

The RRSP still remains the best & simplest tax deduction for a working adult in your prime income-earning years.  By reducing your income now, you can ensure your own money is going towards your future retirement, and not have to depend on anybody else.  No matter what scheme the government is discussing, the RRSP has been around for years, and will not go away.  Take the tax break, but ensure you re-allocate the savings to something that will help you now.  For example, if you contribute to the RRSP monthly, implement the tax savings now to increase your mortgage payment, or contribute to your TFSA.  By paying yourself first, you will be in a better position in 12 months no matter what happens.

Markets:  What performed best in 2013?  Global markets, primarily US and Europe continued their strong comeback, far outperforming Canada.  Other than a quick market set-back in June, that affected fixed income greatly, and many equity markets, this year saw more steady rise in equities.  Is the volatility behind us?  Most analysts say "NO".  They believe the markets are getting healthier, but we still have prominent government debt. and extremely low interest rates which will have to end at some point.   Therefore, 2014 is expected to be more volatile than 2013, but the challenge for growth will continue as fixed income still provides yields too low to sustain growth in your portfolio.

Interesting to note, the appreciating US dollar helped to contribute to strong Global returns.  January 2014 saw the fastest shift in the US dollar in 1 month than we've seen in over 4 years.

Quote for February:  In celebration of Valentine's Day and Black History Month, I give you the following quote:

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."
