Beginning in fall 2015, UMSON will offer a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) Post-Bachelor of Science in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice specialty. UMSON is launching the new specialty in response to a continued need to strengthen the NNP workforce.  Click here to read more.
White Coat Ceremonies Held in Baltimore and at Shady Grove
New Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Clinical Nurse Leader students received their white coats at ceremonies held February 3 in Baltimore and February 23 at the Universities at Shady Grove. This is the second time the white coat ceremonies were held at UMSON, one of 100 nursing schools to receive funding support through a collaborative effort between the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing to pilot White Coat Ceremonies. See more photos of the Baltimore and Shady Grove events. 
Dean's List Students Honored
Receptions held recently at UMSON in Baltimore and at the Universities at Shady Grove, honored approximately 120 BSN and RN-to-BSN students who made the Dean's List for the fall 2014 semester.To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must have taken 12 or more credits and earned at least a 3.75 GPA

Faculty and Students Shine at SNRS Conference
UMSON was well-represented at the Southern Nursing Research Society's Annual Conference, held Feb. 25-28 in Tampa, Fla. Faculty presenters included Meg Johantgen, PhD, RN, associate professor and assistant dean for the PhD program; Robin Newhouse, PhD '00, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, professor and chair, Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health; and Sandra Picot, PhD, CLNC, FAAN, FGSA, associate professor. Phyllis Sharps, PhD '88, MS, BSN '70, RN, FAAN associate dean for community and global programs at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, received Insight Into Diversity's Diversity Visionary Award. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to diversity and inclusion in higher education through their vision, dedication, and service.
David Vlahov, PhD, MS '80, BSN, RN, dean, University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing, was re-elected to serve a second term on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Board. His term will begin March 23, following the AACN's Annual Spring Meeting.
Margaret Chamberlain Wilmoth, PhD, MSS, MS, BSN '75, RN, FAAN,  was honored at a ceremony on February 12, celebrating her promotion to Major General in the United States Army Reserve. The event was held at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Arlington, Va .

Leadership Maryland is a professional development program dedicated to building a stronger Maryland by educating, cultivating, and connecting the state's brightest leaders. Mary Pat Ulicny, MS '11, MHA, RN, CNE, clinical instructor and director, clinical simulation labs, Universities at Shady Grove, was awarded a HRSA-supported Nurse Faculty Loan Program Award in the amount of $14,000 from Duquesne University School of Nursing for the 2015 academic year. Rebecca Wiseman, PhD '93, RN, associate professor and chair of the UMSON program at the Universities at Shady Grove, has been appointed to the Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center Governing Board. She is serving a three-year term as a community board member. Click here to read more. 

The following faculty members participated in the Global Innovations in Nursing and Midwifery Education, Research, and Practice Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, January 26-27. Those who participated included Rwandan faculty members, who are clinical nurse mentors: Melody Brooks, BSN; Kelly Burke, MPH, BSN; Sophia Kairanga, BSN; Barbara Rukundo, BSN; Jessie Silver, BSN; Stephanie Taylor, BSN; and Jessica Tsuchiya, BSN. Also participating were Rwandan faculty members Helen Ewing, MSN, advisor to the director of distance and e-learning, and Renee Pyburn, MSN, advisor to the director of simulation labs; and UMSON faculty member Marik Moen, MPH, MSN, assistant professor.
