The Low Country Team earned 11 points and won the WSCGA Cross State Shootout by 1 point over the Upstate Team. The Championship was shortened to 27 holes since thunderstorms prevented the completion of the back nine.

It was a tight  finish today with the last two groups still fighting for points and only two holes left to play. The team of Woodard & Johnson from the Upstate were leading the back nine and the team of Brown & Estes were leading the back nine and the over all match before the lightning sirens went off. Each of the three teams earned 2 points for todays round.

About the Cross State Shootout
The Women's South Carolina Golf Association will hold the inaugural WSCGA Cross State Shootout at Belfair Golf Club on the West Course August 29th and 30th. Teams of 8 from 3 regions of South Carolina will compete for the Champions Cup. The teams are mostly comprised of Mid-Amateur women at least 21 years old. The WSCGA Executive Director, Jennifer O'Brien, said this event was created to provide an event to women whom have graduated from college and may not have the opportunity to play in State Championships due to family and work commitments. "There's a large demographic that is not always able to take advantage of the playing opportunities in South Carolina, so we wanted to create an event that would bring golf to them, in a fun, competitive team environment", O'Brien said.

South Carolina was split into 3 regions; Low Country, Midlands, and Up-State. Captains were selected for each region and each captain invited the players for their teams. Belfair was selected as the host site. O'Brien said, "Belfair was our 1st choice. We have a long history with the club and they hosted the WSCGA Senior Championship in 2013. It was a no-brainer to ask Belfair, it's such a great facility and course. We are just thrilled they were able to fit this into their schedule."

The event will be 36-holes of 2-person teams competing in match play and scored using the Nassau format where you earn a point for the front nine, a point for the back nine, and a point for the overall match. Each team captain will submit her 2-person teams at drawing parties that will be held Friday and Saturday night. A blind draw will be held to determine pairings and tee times.

"We are really excited to get more Mid-Amateur women involved with the WSCGA. Our services tend to favor the senior and retired woman, and we want these ladies to know we want them to be a part of the WSCGA and the golf community in South Carolina," said O'Brien. The players do not need a handicap and do not need to be members of the WSCGA to be invited to play. "We're hopeful that more mid-amateur women will hear about this event and reach out to be considered for future years," O'Brien added, "Unfortunately, if they aren't from South Carolina or do not have a handicap we have no way of knowing they're out there and willing to play."
