Board Authorizes $40 Million Planning Effort

For Replacement of AirTrain at Newark Liberty Airport

Planning work to replace the aging AirTrain Newark system moved forward April 30 with a $40 million planning commitment from the Port Authority's Board of Commissioners to study construction of a new system with enhanced capacity, better service and increased reliability.

AirTrain Newark is an integral part of Newark Liberty International Airport's landside transportation infrastructure, providing connectivity for passengers and airport employees traveling on-airport as well as to and from the airport on the regional rail transportation network.  AirTrain Newark opened in 1996, first by serving the terminals, parking garages and rental facilities on the airport.  Expansion in 2001 with the opening of the Newark Airport Rail Link station connected the AirTrain with NJ Transit and Amtrak trains running along the Northeast Corridor tracks, providing travelers with easy access to major urban centers including New York and Philadelphia.

Port Authority Launches 'Portfolio,' a New Blog

"Portfolio," a new blog by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was launched in late April. It will spotlight the largely unknown but critical role that transportation infrastructure plays in the region.

The blog, which will be available at portfolio.panynj.gov, will take a behind-the-scenes look at the Port Authority's airports, six tunnels and bridges, port facilities and the PATH rail system to enhance the public's general knowledge, interest and understanding about Port Authority facilities.

The blog also will serve as a platform from which to spotlight interesting stories that rarely make the news, including those of the many unsung staff at the Port Authority, who operate and maintain these facilities.

New Traffic Pattern Implemented at the Goethals
As Part of the Bridge Replacement Project

Motorists traveling eastbound to Staten Island via the Goethals Bridge are being re-routed to a new temporary approach ramp as construction continues on the Goethals Bridge Replacement Project.

Motorists exiting the New Jersey Turnpike at Interchange 13 and motorists traveling on I-278 are being diverted onto this temporary ramp leading to the Staten-Island bound Goethals Bridge. Local traffic using the ramp at Cole Place, in Elizabeth, N.J., will be detoured westbound to I-278 and then follow a newly constructed U-turn connecting to I-278 eastbound and the new approach ramp.

Stay up to date on the impact of the Goethals project on your travel at the Travel Advisory page on our website, or by signing up for Bridge and Tunnel Alerts.
