Happy New Year!

AAHI hopes you had a fantastic start to your new year! We look forward to going into the community for outreach and striving towards our goals in 2015.

We would also like to take this time to bid our Program Coordinator, Jasmine Vinh, a heartwarming farewell. In her two and a half years at AAHI, Jasmine has helped expand our outreach efforts and strengthen our Health Promoters Program. We will miss her passion and dedication to the community. We wish Jasmine the best of luck in her future endeavors!
What Has AAHI Been Up To?

We cannot believe that we have already hit the halfway point of Fiscal Year 2015 (FY2015)! Over the past six months, AAHI had many wonderful opportunities to partner with community leaders and organizations to better serve Asian Americans in Montgomery County. We are excited to share a few highlights and accomplishments we have reached thus far.
  • Hosted Resource Information Tables at 14 outreach events
  • Provided in-language and in-person assistance to 869 community members on health information and local resources
  • Distributed 1,561 pieces of literature on various health topics
  • Provided 886 educational encounters on various health topics
  • Provided 375 bone density and carbon monoxide screenings
  • Provided 30 breast self-exam demonstrations
  • Provided 145 health service referrals
  • Hosted 103 community members representing 49 organizations at the fall Empowering Community Health Organizations (E.C.H.O.) Workshop entitled "Mental Health in Our Communities II"
  • Trained 28 multilingual Health Promoters who speak 15 different languages
Thank you to our community partners, Health Promoters, Steering Committee, and staff for all your hard work. We look forward to seeing what else is in store for the rest of FY2015!
AAHI in the News

As part of AAHI's media campaign, and to increase awareness of prevalent health issues in the Asian American community, we collaborate with several local Asian newspapers and magazines to publish in-language articles. The readership spans across many different cultures and communities including Asian Indian, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese. These articles provide general information about different health topics and Montgomery County resources to its readers.

Thus far in FY2015, we published articles on mental health and mammograms. Please click on the links to read the articles in Chinese, English, Korean, and Vietnamese!

AAHI Participates in Community Review

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has conducted community reviews since the fall of 1999. Teams of Montgomery County community members who have knowledge of the health and human services field as well as reflect the ethnic, economic, and cultural diversity of the County conduct the reviews. These reviews provide a consistent way of looking at programs to ensure that Montgomery County's residents are safe, healthy, and self-sufficient.

This year, AAHI was selected for a student community review by the University of Maryland Public Policy graduate students. Over the span of two months, a student team reviewed AAHI's programming efforts. They noted both areas where we exceeded expectations and areas for improvement. Last month, AAHI was presented with a Certificate of Review in keeping with the DHHS' commitment to quality public service. We are glad we were able to participate in this valuable experience and hope to incorporate what we learned into AAHI. Special thanks to the wonderful community review team, Arva Jackson, Alex Knobel, and Sofi Martinez!
Sincerely,

AAHI Staff
