Students receive annual academic awards
Congratulations to the more than 225 students who were honored at the annual Academic Recognition Ceremony last month. Students were recognized for their achievements in the various subject areas and for being named to the honor roll each of the four quarters last school year. Tennis courts nearly ready for play
Today after school, Fr. Adam Ahern blessed the new tennis courts, which are within days of being finished and ready for use. The team should be able to play on the courts beginning next week.

Freshmen, 7th grade start year with retreats
Class retreats are an important part of student life at Providence. Each class has an offering designed for that age group. The freshman class broke into four groups to spend four different days at Mt. St. Francis Retreat Center's rope's team-building course. The seventh grade spent yesterday as a group at St. John Catholic Church in Starlight in a day run by Providence staff and a team of high school students that includes prayer, games, community building, witness talks and small group discussion. Next week, the sophomores will experience their day of reflection beginning Sept. 8. Click here to read some student reflections on these experiences.

Fall show cast excited about upcoming production

Seniors  Maresa Kelly  and Nick Long are just two of the cast members of  Anne Frank & Me , a story about the awakening of a modern teen's understanding of the Holocaust when she is transported to Nazi-occupied Paris in the early 1940s. Donations needed for backback service project 
Donations of  toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, lip balm, towels, toilet paper, travel-sized toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, bath gel and deodorant, and new or gently used T-shirts and socks are being accepted through Sept. 11 as part of the Walk the Town/ Stuff the Backpacks project. This is  the first school-wide service project of the year and seeks to help those who are homeless by providing some basic necessities to take care of their daily needs. Students may drop off the items in designated boxes in their House faculty sponsor's classroom through Sept. 11.

The items will be given to the Coalition for the Homeless, a local organization that counted around 1,600 homeless people in the metro area in January 2014. The coalition will be taking the items donated by Providence students and creating at least 100 backpacks with basic necessities to give to those in need.

Athletic teams off to great start for the season
Several teams have started their season ranked in the top 10 in their sport. Volleyball, which moved up to 3A postseason competition due to the IHSAA Success Factor Rule, is ranked No. 2 in 3A after defeating No. 17 3A Silver Creek as well as three top-ranked Kentucky teams. Over the weekend, the team suffered its first loss, a close five-set match vs. No. 3 4A Hamilton Southeast . Boys Soccer is now ranked No. 5 in 1A after a 5 -1-1 start , having lost to previously No. 1 1A ranked Covenant Christian. Girls Soccer is ranked No. 5  in 1A after a 4-0-1 start, including a 6-0 win over No. 11 Heritage Hills. Boys Tennis is ranked No. 5  in District 8, having won the New Albany Invitational (including beating No. 6 ranked New Albany) and dropping only one match so far to No. 3 ranked Bloomington South. Girls Golf has placed among the top teams in several invitationals, including a fourth place in the Jasper Invitational.

RSVP now for ASAP Appreciation Dinner
Last year, nearly 45 percent of our students received some type of financial aid. We are grateful to all our generous alumni, parents, past parents, grandparents and friends who provide the contributions necessary to make that financial support possible.  If you gave to the ASAP fund or would like to support current and future Providence students who otherwise could not afford to attend, join us for the Annual Student Assistance Program (ASAP) Appreciation Dinner on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. at Huber's Orchard and Winery Plantation Hall. 

The guest speaker for this complimentary dinner is Dr. Daniel J.
Elsener, president of Marian University in Indianapolis, who will offer his thoughts on the value of Catholic education. Prior to joining Marian in 2001, Dr. Elsener was the executive director for the Office of Catholic Education and executive director for the Office of Stewardship and Development for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, as well as superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Wichita, Kan.

Under Dr. Elsener's leadership, in 2010 the school announced the creation of the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine, which became Indiana's first medical school in 110 years.

Reminder: Providence Dads invited to cookout
All current, future and past Providence dads are invited to attend a cookout sponsored by the Providence Dads Club and Alumni Association before the home football game vs. Holy Cross on Friday. 

Meet in the Activity Center for grilled burgers and hot dogs and a chance to meet fellow Providence dads from 6:00-6:40 p.m. Game time is 7:00. The meal is free, but a freewill offering will be accepted. Click here for more info.


Picture retakes Sept. 11
Picture retakes are Friday, Sept. 11, for students who did not have their photo taken during registration or who are unhappy with their school photos. Photos will be taken in the Activity Center during lunches. Order forms are available in the main office. Students unhappy with their original photograph must bring the entire original packet of photos. Students having retakes may dress up and must follow the guidelines in the handbook. No jeans allowed.

Thank you to golf scramble participants, sponsors
Thank you to all the alumni, parents and friends who took part in the annual Pioneer Cup Golf Scramble at Covered Bridge last week. Of the 26 teams who played, the first flight winners included  Eddie Zoeller '63, Stu Voyles, Jim King '64 and Mike Bauer; the second flight winners were  Bryan Fifer ex-'06, Marlin Andres '76, Brian Kruer '94 and Vince Rose '94; and the third flight winners were Mike Hublar '70, Bob Hublar '63, Nancy Hublar '73 and Mary Pat (Hublar) Hoessle '66 . We had an exciting putt off for the hole-in-one contest but no winner.

Reminder: Alumni Night free cookout Friday
All alumni are invited to attend a special cookout and reception sponsored by the Alumni Association and Providence Dads' Club on Friday, Sept. 4, before the home football game vs. Holy Cross. During halftime of the game, 11 alumni teams celebrating five- or 10-year anniversaries of their post-season victories will be honored. Register for Alumni Glow Golf
The Alumni Association has a few more spots available for teams in the second annual Alumni Glow Golf Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Covered Bridge. The Glow Golf Challenge is played in a fun, unique format and is open to alumni, family and friends ages 21 and over. The event is open to the first 15 teams of four. The cost is $50 per player and includes nine holes of golf, a special glow-in-the-dark golf ball, appetizers and prizes. 

The evening begins with registration and happy hour at 7:00 p.m. Shot gun start is approximately 8:15 p.m. Price includes appetizers, golf, one glow golf ball, and prizes.  If you are interested in forming a team, please contact  Brad Denman '02 at [email protected].  

BLUE PRIDE ON DISPLAY

Thank you to Mrs. Marshall for 10 years of service
L ast week, Debbie (Sparks) Marshall '84 worked her last Pioneer Cup Golf Scramble at Providence. After 10 years as a Providence staff member, Mrs. Marshall has left to devote more time to her family, in particular her first grandchild born in June.

Mrs. Marshall began working at Providence in 2005 as administrative assistant to the president when her son Justin '06 was a senior and son Nathan '09 was a freshman. (Her daughter, Taylor, graduated in 2013). Mrs. Marshall worked in the President's Office for seven years before transitioning to the Advancement Office as director of special events and constituency management. In her role in the Advancement Office, she successfully organized important fundraising events, including the annual Gala Dinner & Auction, Pioneer Golf Scramble and ASAP Dinner. Previously, she worked at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School as an instructional assistant.

Mrs. Marshall said she will miss the ministry in which she has served for the last decade, especially being able to help students and families attend Providence. "Of the many rewards of working here, one of the greatest of my current position is what we work for every day, which is to help students attend here by raising money for tuition assistance," she said.

We wish Mrs. Marshall well and look forward to seeing her at Boys Soccer games since son Nathan is an assistant coach for the team.

Six new tennis courts are under construction on the Providence campus, complete with lighting, bleachers, and nearby concessions/restrooms. Some folks are declaring these new courts are the first-ever at Providence, but that is not the case.
