Every American has a superpower, and it's a powerful one. You use it every time you vote or write your congressman or stage a peaceful protest. That superpower is your voice, and while it won't let you leap tall buildings in a single bound, it does give you the ability to make a positive and lasting difference in your community. To me, that's a much more potent power to have than x-ray vision. I bring this up because I'd like to ask each of you to use your collective voices to help Tinley Park. Gov. Rauner has recently proposed cutting the municipal share of income taxes, also called the Local Government Distributive Fund, or LGDF, by 50% for all communities in Illinois. For Tinley Park, this translates to a $2.8 million reduction in our General Fund, which pays for things such as street repair, police officers, snow plowing and other essential Village services. This not only impacts Tinley Park - these cuts would be statewide, meaning municipalities that have not been as successful in balancing their budgets as Tinley Park has been would be hit very hard. Which brings me to a core point - why are municipalities that have remained solvent in tough economic times being asked to help bail out a State that hasn't? Local municipalities shouldn't have to pay the price for Illinois' mismanagement and neglect. Now is the time when all of us must use our power of voice to come together to support full funding of the LGDF. As we speak, the Illinois Municipal League (IML) is aggressively working inside the state capitol to protect full funding of local services, and we need your help to generate grassroots support with Illinois legislators.

Jump into spring at Bunny Hop

| If you're looking for a little free family fun this Easter, Tinley Park has what you need!  Grab the kids and come out to the annual Downtown Tinley Bunny Hop from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 29 at the Oak Park Avenue Metra train station, 6700 South St., Tinley Park. Children will be able to search for Easter eggs at activity locations and have their pictures takes with the Easter Bunny (remember to bring a camera!) The event also will feature DJ entertainment, new games and food, as well as vintage photos and crafts at the nearby Tinley Park Historical Society, 6727 W. 174th St., Tinley Park.

White Sox again offering Tinley discount

The Chicago White Sox will once again offer specially priced tickets to Tinley Park residents and their families and friends to  watch the South Siders take on the Detroit Tigers at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, June 6 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.
Lower Box seats are $31 ($15 off), Outfield Reserved seats are $18 ($10 off), Bleacher seats are $16 ($10 off), and Upper Box seats are $16 ($5 off).

IDOT to resume LaGrange construction

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is preparing to resume its multiyear LaGrange Road widening project from 131st to 179th streets. As part of construction, the left-hand turn lanes at 175th Street at LaGrange Road will be closed beginning Tuesday, March 24. Left turns from southbound LaGrange Road onto 175th Street and left turns from westbound 175th Street onto southbound LaGrange Road will be prohibited during this time. Motorists will still be able to make right turns onto both roads. This lane closure will last for about two weeks. The $95 million project began in the summer of 2013 and is projected to end in the fall of 2015. Click here for more information and project updates.
