Thought for the Day

"To be able to utter 'Every day is a good day,' from the true  standpoint of enlightenment, one must have a solid grasp of the world as it is, and not some imaginary utopian kind of world where it never rains and there is only sunshine, like Southern California."

- Ruben Habito from Living Zen, Loving God

Pastor's note:
So Cal = Utopia ???  :-)

Many of us enjoyed making stars for the Christmas tree together last week after worship, and I was reminded of how nice it was simply to sit and chat (and of course, watching the kids work together at a craft is always fun, too).

Rev. Carolyn Piper, whose life we'll celebrate this Saturday, was not only a pioneering Christian leader, but she was also brilliant at her "ministry of the kitchen."  She knew how to "sit and chat," asking people about their stories--about what had carried them to the present moment--with interest and care.

How about finding somebody, perhaps outside of your normal circles, to sit and chat with this week?  Some life-giving discoveries might be made!

Shalom,
Dwight

Calling all fans of our preschoolers!

An hour and to spend with a little group of funny, sweet preschoolers?! Playing with trains, pretending to cook and then having a tea party? Making silly faces, reading short books, coloring and even holding a snuggly baby? What could be better? You may even find this time a spiritual practice of sorts.

We're looking for volunteers for the nursery during Denison's Thanksgiving and winter breaks-if you can spare one Sunday morning, the parents of these young ones would truly appreciate it. If you know of a young adult (18 years or older) who would like to take this on as a paying gig, please contact Ceciel at:  [email protected].

Here are the dates:

Nov. 30

Dec. 21

Jan. 11

Jan. 18

Stewardship Matters

We're in the midst of our Fall Stewardship campaign.  Click here to read the letter from Stewardship Chair, and Vice-Moderator, David Ball.  If you'd be willing to commit to support the church during 2015, you may use one of the pledge cards available in the Sanctuary, or you may contact Dave directly through e-mail.  Every one of your thoughtful and generous contributions to our common work--financial and otherwise--matters!

 ____________________________________

A Gift for Matching

A donor has contributed $1500 towards our 2014 building renovation priority needs as a "matching grant."  You can help secure this gift with your donation! Jack Esslinger's "chapel" collection box (which many of you saw last Sunday) will soon be available at the back of the sanctuary for receiving donations towards this match.  Or you could contribute by simply noting on your check to UCG, "Towards Matching Grant," and putting that in the collection plate.  Thanks!

November 23rd, "Thanksgiving Sunday"

Thanksgiving Worship Service
An "Agape Meal" in the Annex, 10 AM
Rather than having a traditional service in our sanctuary, on Nov. 23rd, we'll gather around tables in the Annex Gym, and share a meal of fruits, cheese, bread and drink, giving thanks for the good gifts of life!  Lots of singing, activities for the kids, and "communion" in a different way.  After worship, kids will be invited to help set up a few Advent decorations in our buildings.

Thanksgiving Meal at Trinity, 2 PM

Afterwards, the United Church of Granville will partner with Trinity Episcopal Church in Newark to serve a community Thanksgiving meal. Trinity will supply the turkey, dressing, potatoes and gravy. UCG will be responsible for vegetables (corn and green beans) and desserts. Cans of corn and green beans can be dropped off at church. Frozen vegetables and desserts can also be dropped off. There is a freezer in the basement.

Based on attendance at Lunches on the Square, we anticipate serving over a 100 meals. Any donations are welcome. Call Linda Mossholder 522-6350 if you have questions.

Granville Ecumenical

Thanksgiving Service

7 PM at St. Luke's Episcopal Church

An offering will be taken up to support the Licking County Coalition of Care.

Participate in the Ecumenical Choir that evening!

The massed choir this year will sing two anthems.  The first is the perennial favorite, "For the Beauty of the Earth" by John Rutter.  Paul Radkowski (Church of St. Edward the Confessor) will conduct, and Philip Everingham (First Presbyterian Church) will accompany.  The second is a newer anthem called "Consecration" by Frederick Chatfield, using the Frances Havergal text known to so many, "Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee."  Scott Hayes (St. Luke's Church) will conduct, and Jackie Dawson will accompany.  To allow as many to participate as desired, we will only have one short rehearsal preceding the service.  Here's the schedule:

Sunday, November 23:

5:45 pm - Choir Warm-Up

7:00 pm - Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service

All singers are welcome!  So we can be sure to have music ready, please let Scott Hayes know by November 21 at [email protected], or by calling St Luke's Church office at 740-587-0167.

YOU CAN HELP!
...prepare for this Holiday Supper, Dec. 6th!

Get out your soup pots/crock pots and cook up some soup for the Candlelight Walking Tour...We have provided 4 recipes for you to choose from (Jerry Griffin will also be making his Vegetarian Spicy Black Bean).  Along with the soups, we will be serving breads and drinks...There will be a fantastic "Brownie Bar" for the sweet tooth in you.  Our chapel will be decorated with fresh, local greens and the highlight will be a large, fresh Christmas tree decorated by church members.

Join the fun!!...make a soup, or 2-dozen brownies (recipe of your choice) or help make Christmas Tree Decorations.

Instead of having many, many crockpots and cords on the table, we will have 5-7 pots and keep refilling the pots with more of the same soup.  Please pick up a recipe on the Welcome Table in the back of the sanctuary or use the this link to the recipes.  These soups are simple recipes, feel free to "tweak" them if you want.  If you make your own stock that would be great, but store brands are just fine.  We would like all the soups delivered by 2 PM Saturday, Dec. 6, to the chapel kitchen.  Thanks!!  Questions?  Help?  Contact Kitty Leatham - [email protected] or 412-799-4118.
