Market News

Say hello to our new Market Manager, Whitney Richardson, joining us this Sunday! Whitney has been a supporter of local food systems for over 8 years, as a farmer, gardener, consultant, culinary programs developer, teacher, designer, event planner, policy advocate, composter, and writer. We met her a few years back as a vendor for a project that created perfume using flowers grown at community gardens and farms across Chicago and are excited to have her on board! You can find her at the market on Sunday, grooming plots at Neighbor's Garden, writing for Newcity, and leading community arts workshops around town. Send your love to our old manager, Rachel Fletcher, as she heads back east! Rachel, you will be missed.

A  Last  Word

Dear Neighbors,

Farm Aid is back in Illinois.  The not-for-profit organization that caught the country's imagination in September, 1985 when it brought Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Bob Dylan, BB King and many other musicians to a benefit concert in Champaign, Illinois will be at  Northerly Island in Chicago on Saturday, September 19 for its 30th Anniversary.

Over the years since, Farm Aid has raised nearly $50 million for the cause of America's family farms.  They're a fine organization, worthy of your support (here's a link to their last Annual Report).  One way to do that is to attend what has blossomed into an "all day music and food festival".  It's not cheap--tickets start at $49--but how often do you get to hear Willie Nelson, and Mavis Staples(!) on the same bill, along with lots of other country and folk inspired musicians out of doors on the Lake Front?

If you're interested, here's the Concert site link.  And if you can't make it?  Well, you could catch the webcast on the 19th, and on the Sunday after (and every other Sunday from now through October 25), come to our own little "Farm Aid" event here in Logan Square.  Home grown music, fresh food from local family farmers who'll happily tell you how our Market has helped them stay on the farm, good food ready to eat made locally by owners of small businesses, and the chance to say hello to your neighbors as well.  So...if we don't see each other at Farm Aid...

I'll see you at the Market!
