TIFTON'S TRIBUTE TO TROOPS,
FALL FROLIC THIS WEEKEND
Veterans Day may be on Tuesday, Nov. 11, but Tifton begins its observance this weekend with a full slate of activities.
The Fulwood Fall Frolic begins today, Friday, Nov. 7, hosted by the All That Glitters dance troupe with a "Glow in the Park" event from 5-9 p.m. in Fulwood Park. There will be a one-mile GLOW run/walk, a GLOW dance, GLOW bubbles and GLOW face painting.
A light show and a concert on the stage with Kilby Entertainment is planned.
 On Saturday, "Tifton's Tribute to the Troops"begins with a 5K run at Fulwood Park at 8 a.m. Also, the Exchange Club of Tifton hosts a veteran's pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Veterans eat free and others may eat for $2.
The patriotic parade begins at 10 a.m. Tifton businessman Jack Stone serves as parade grand marshal. The parade begins at Love Avenue and 10th Street and goes south on Main Street, turns left on 3rd Street to Tift Avenue and north to Fulwood Park.
The Fulwood Fall Frolic, sponsored by All That Glitters dance troupe, continues at 11 a.m. at Fulwood Park and includes arts and crafts, entertainment, games, rides, food, animals and children's activities.
At 5 p.m., patriotic music will be played at Veterans Park downtown before fireworks between 6 and 6:30 p.m.

ARTISTS' MARKET ON LOVE THIS SATURDAY
An Artists' Market on Love Avenue is scheduled 10 a.m.-5 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 8 ,at the Tifton Museum of Arts and Heritage.
The market is an opportunity to buy original art and fine crafts from local and visiting artists -- and enjoy food and music as well.
The market will be both in the building and on the museum grounds next door to the public library on Love Avenue in Downtown Tifton.

Irene Dodd, the daughter of Georgia artist Lamar Dodd and a master in her own right, will be featured in a one-woman show exhibiting the latest works reflecting the last three years of her international travels. Fog-shrouded Irish castles, quiet Italian canals and quaint Norwegian streetscapes will be the stars of this new gallery show, which will be on display in the gallery until Feb. 13.
Irene Dodd herself will be on hand to give an informal art lecture at 6 p.m. today after which guests may enjoy light refreshments and guided gallery tours. There is no charge to attend this evening event.

BESSIE TIFT CHAPEL ROTTING AWAY
TIFTON LOSING PIECE OF HISTORY

According to Ida Belle Williams' 1948 "History of Tift County," Bessie Tift Chapel was erected by the  Methodists in 1889 and sold to Capt. Henry Harding Tift, Tifton's founder, in 1901 when the Methodists wanted to build a new church. Their new brick church was built next to the U.S Post Office (now the Tifton-Tift County Public Library) on Love Avenue.
Capt. Tift named the chapel after his wife Bessie and had it moved to the cotton mill section on U.S. Highway 82 East. He invited all denominations to use the chapel for worship.
In 1902, Capt. Tift deed the chapel and land to the First Baptist Church. For some unknown reason, the deed was not recorded until 1924.
A few years ago, the preacher at the time was quoted in an article saying the chapel was to be moved to what was then called the Georgia Agrirama. I checked with a spokesman at First Baptist Church about the move and found that it was too expensive to relocate the building.
No preachers at the chapel are known prior to 1911; however, beginning that year, the Rev. Dave Rainey bean preaching there for 14 years; next was Banks Allen, followed by Willis Hollingsworth, T.W. Snider, C.W. Willis, and T.W. Branch.
In the 1972 Tifton Centennial Commemorative Book, an article about the chapel adds preachers Coleman Walker, Paul Wade, Jim Powell, Donald Swafford, Earl Courtey and Rollie Stanquiz.
The article also noted that a social hall had been added.
A sign in front of the old building lists Bishop Danny Smith as preacher.
The chapel currently has no roof; the sides are being propped up; and it is rotting away.
Surely, something can be done to preserve this piece of Tifton history.

WIREGRASS TECH FOUNDATION TO HOLD
ANNUAL BANQUET NOV. 18
Wiregrass Georgia Technical College Foundation North will hold its 29th Annual Meeting and Banquet on
Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Charles Harris Learning Center on the Ben Hill-Irwin Campus of Wiregrass Georgia Tech in Fitzgerald.
 Attendees will dine on a prime rib dinner with all the trimmings.  Entertainment will be provided by Christian comedian/ventriloquist Steve Brogan. He started performing at an early age and now performs across the Southeast. Brogan has been in the business of creating clean, crisp, entertainment for more than 30 years and is one of the top pro
fessional ventriloquists in the nation today. He has appeared on TV shows such as "Good Morning America," the "Today Show," "Swan's Place," and Fox's "Comedy Connection."

The Wiregrass Foundation North provides support to students from Atkinson, Ben Hill, Coffee, Irwin and Wilcox counties in several ways including academic scholarships, GED testing scholarships, and program book, supplies and equipment purchases.

The annual cane grinding and syrup making parties are on two consecutive Saturdays, Nov. 8 and 15, at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
The museum's Historic Village is one of the few places left where visitors step back in time to see sugar cane grinding with a mule leading the way. The sweet juice pouring from the cane mill will then be transferred to the syrup shed where it will be cooked down in a cast iron kettle to make delicious cane syrup.
Cornmeal pancakes with hot cane syrup can be sampled at the Gibbs House. Cane syrup will also be available for sale.
There is an entrance fee.

Cancer STOMP is a team fundraising campaign where teams are encouraged to get creative to raise funds to fight cancer locally. The Cancer STOMP campaign wraps up with a Walk & Carnival on Nov. 22 where the community comes together to celebrate success, remember loved ones we've lost to cancer and honor the amazing cancer survivors in our lives. The beauty of Cancer STOMP is that no effort or amount raised is too small because when all the efforts are combined, together we make a huge impact.

Proceeds benefit the Tifton Junior Woman's Club scholarship fund and the club's other community service work.
The event includes a black light tent, music and glow face-painting. There will be prizes for age group winners and overall winners, as well as medals for all participants 12 and under.
This is Tifton's first Glow Run.
