Westland Extends Leaf Pick Up Program
Westland, MI - As the leaves begin to fall and residents in the All American City start to wonder what they have to do to get their leaves picked up and how many bags of leaves or compost will be accepted, Mayor Wild reminds them of the following procedures.

During the majority of the compost season, which is from March 31, 2014 until November 28, 2014- 10 bags or 5 cans of compost are accepted, however during the fall moths of October and November we double the amount of compost bags or garbage cans containing leaves, meaning we accept up to 20 bags and 10 cans of leaves. This is done in an effort to help our residents dispose of the large volume of leaves experienced during this season. Residents are reminded; do not put leaves in street or loose leaves at the curb.  ALL leaves must be in a can marked compost or in brown paper leaf bags.

Residents are advised to be mindful of the weight of the garbage cans and or compost bags that are being put out to the curb as wet leaves will become heavy.  Pick up has been extended, this year and the last day will be December 5, 2014. The waste hauler will pick up leaves on the resident's regularly scheduled trash and compost pick up days until the first week of December when the program ends. This date is used because typically most composting facilities stop accepting materials at that time. In the past some composting facilities have expanded this date due to unseasonable warm temperatures and the City of Westland has continued to allow residents the ability to dispose of compost beyond the first week of December, if this opportunity arises we will send notification using various sources or media including the newspapers and our website.   December 5, 2013 will be the final pick up day.

If you have any questions or need more specific information, please call the Department of Public Service at (734)728-1770 Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm and we will be happy to help you. Have a great Fall Season.
