Letter from Laurie

Dear Friend,

From Equal Pay Day to the citywide rallies advocating for an increase of the minimum wage to $15, the work to ensure that all New Yorkers earn a living wage to meet the rising costs of food and housing continues. There are too many households across this city that are struggling to make ends meet. We can and must do better to bring an end to poverty.

As Chair of the Committee on Women's Issues, I held a joint hearing with the Committee on Civil Service and Labor, chaired by Council Member Daneek I. Miller to hear testimony on several bills that would reform employment practices that often places working women at a disadvantage. Among the agenda items discussed was Resolution 649, which  I introduced along with Council Member Corey Johnson in support of a bill in the New York State Assembly that would increase wage transparency within the workplace.

It is time for us to close the wage gap to sustain the upward trajectory of our city and state's economy. We can only move forward as a society when everyone has an equal opportunity to fully contribute towards the growth and development of his or her community.

Yours in Partnership,
Laurie A. Cumbo
