Trap Shooting at CLHS

Chisago Lakes High School works hard at providing opportunities for all students and is proud to announce the newest activity: trap shooting. We have recently become members of the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League.  This is the fastest growing sport in Minnesota with more than 8,000 student athletes expected to participate in the clay target league in 2015. According to the MN State High School Clay Target League, out of the 45 activity programs that the Minnesota State High School League sponsored in the 2013-2014 school year, the clay target activity led all programs with a 79% increase in participation over the previous school year.  Clay Target League is ranked 17th amongst the top participation of sponsored activities by the MSHSL.

The Clay Target League

reports that this is the only co-ed and adaptive sport and has no reported injuries or gun-free zone violations in schools since its start in 2001.

For our first year, we have many interested students and are planning on more than thirty participants in grades nine through twelve.  The coaches will be Jacob Goodroad, Jeff Lindeman, and Julie Mellum.  The activity season will run from April 6 through the end of May and all shooting will be completed at the Chisago Lakes Sportsman's Club in Chisago City.  The 2015 Trap Shooting Championships will be held on Saturday June 20 at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake MN.

April 17: Kindergarten Round Up at Taylors Falls Elementary: Parent Letter

Spring has arrived and third term ends on Wednesday, April 1 - no joke. Tennis, baseball, and track practices are underway and the greenhouse is making progress for all your planting needs. One thing that happens in the spring is the work that begins to get ready for the next school year - from kindergarten roundup to class placements at the elementary, and curriculum and class development at the secondary to meet the changing needs of students, colleges, and employers. This time of year really does seem to fly by! We'll try and slow it down and get you caught up with all of the latest news from the district.

CL Alumni at Polaris in Wyoming

Three CLHS grads, Ryan Whitacre (08), Zak Vrudny (09), and Derek Silbernagel (09), are finding success at Polaris in Wyoming.  The three came to the company in different ways, but all agreed that internships, as much as their college coursework, helped them get the jobs they wanted. Each expressed their enthusiasm for the work they're doing - Whitacre as a Powertrain Quality Engineer, Vrudny a Buyer/Plastics, and Silbernagel a Buyer.  The company's assertion that  employees are not only building and designing machines, they are also enthusiastic riders seems to hold true for these three.

Polaris is an area employer committed to contributing resources to the communities in which their employees live and work. The company has more than 500 employees at its Wyoming location and is working on building relationships with area schools. Last year, CLHS received a $6,500 grant to purchase a plasma cutter for its new Project Lead the Way course called Computer Integrated Manufacturing. An ongoing partnership will benefit both Polaris and Chisago Lakes School District as we work together to create learning and training that will help our students meet the future needs of area employers. High School Activities Round Up:
Wondering how your favorite activities are doing? Social media might be your best bet - Facebook (CL Activities and CLHS) and Twitter (most sports have their own Twitter accounts) will keep you in the know.  With winter sports and fine art activities over, here's a look at some of the highlights:
Already on the horizon is the mandatory Information Night for fall sports - a parent meeting scheduled for August 11th at 6:30 p.m. at the high school.

Also, 10 of our coaches and 10 of our student leaders will be participating in the first annual Mississippi 8 Leadership Conference. Each delegation will be developing a purpose statement for their programs.
PBIS Across the District:
Each of the school sites across the district use PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies) to help students make good decisions in all areas of the school and beyond. Taylors Falls Elementary recently had their RIVER Rules added to the hallway to reinforce the ideas of respect, integrity, value, excellence, and responsibility. Primary uses the Wildcat Way which stresses being respectful, responsible, cooperative, and safe; Lakeside uses PRIDE (positive attitude, respect, integrity, discipline, and excellence); CLMS uses High Five (respect, responsibility, compassion, commitment, and integrity); and CLHS uses WILD (wisdom, integrity, leadership, dedication). The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is used across the district, and the elementary schools use the Peaceful Bus program to help students and bus drivers work together for a safe and pleasant bus ride. Additional information on the programs is available on the individual school websites.

Third term is coming to an end this week, and with only one term to go there's plenty left to do. Spring sports have started and testing season is upon us.  We recently got some good news regarding both the 11th grade Math MCA and Graduation Rates.  Chisago Lakes students are looking forward to getting back outside - for recess and in the outdoor classrooms. At the high school, plans for graduation and talk of prom fills the halls.
