A Message from the Pastor

Dear Disciples of Jesus at American Lutheran,

There is no more important time in the life of a Christian and the community of faith than Holy Week, the heart of the church year, which begins on Palm/Passion Sunday, March 29th. As Jesus enters Jerusalem on the last week of his life we walk the journey with him from the joyful palm procession, to the Last Supper with his disciples on Maundy Thursday, to the agony of the cross on Good Friday, to the celebration of the Resurrection on Easter.

Plan to gather in worship with your sisters and brothers in Christ  as we enter fully into the mystery of God's deep love for us, a love which transforms us daily from death to new life.

See you in church,

Pastor Gretchen

Eco-Palms

This Sunday, Palm Sunday, our congregation is proudly waving Eco-Palms in partnership with Lutheran World Relief, helping palm harvesters and their communities move out of lives of poverty and into futures of promise.

How are Eco-Palms different?

  • The palms are gathered and sold in a socially and environmentally just way.
  • Harvesters are paid a fair price per palm based on quality, so they take fewer palms out of the forest, which protects important nature reserves.
  • Community members sort, package and sell the palms themselves - no middlemen - so more of the money paid for the palms stays with the people who worked the hardest to provide them.
  • Because there is a steady market for the palms, locals are motivated to protect the forests (their source of income), ensuring harvests well into the future.
  • Harvesting communities receive 5-6 times the normal   payment per frond.

Holy Week is the high point of the church year for Christians around the world. Plan now to take time with your community of faith as we ponder the mystery of God's love to us through the salvation story of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Palm/Passion Sunday, March 29th 10:00am

Holy Week begins with the triumphal shouts of "Hosanna to the Son of David" as we remember Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem. Our worship begins on the patio outside as we hear Mark's account of the story and then process inside the church with palm fronds. The mood of the service then changes as we hear the Passion Gospel whereby shouts of "Hosanna" become shouts of "Crucify!"

Maundy Thursday, April 2nd 7:30pm

Lent comes to a close as we begin the "Triduum" or Three Days that are the center of our church year. Taken from the Latin word "command" we hear from John's Gospel the mandate to love one another. Our worship on this night also commemorates the institution of the Lord's Supper. The service ends with the stripping of the altar. There is no benediction as these three days are one service held together by the Passion Narrative.

Good Friday, April 3rd 7:30pm

"O God, O My God" is a service of songs, images, silence and prayer based on Jesus' last words on the cross from Psalm 22:

"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?!" As we reflect on Jesus' suffering we also remember his presence with the suffering of all the world today.

Easter Vigil, April 4th 8:00pm, St. Matthew's N. Hollywood

A collaborative service of the Twin Valleys Conference of the Southwest California Synod with Bishop Guy Erwin presiding, followed by a champagne reception to celebrate the Resurrection.

The Resurrection of our Lord, April 5th 10:00am

On Easter Sunday we proclaim with joy that "Christ is Risen!"

Join us for festive worship with special music, followed by a potluck brunch and Easter egg hunt for the children.

The Greatest Legacy Gift Ever Given

It has been said many times, "We cannot out give God." It is so true because God gave us the greatest legacy gift of all time. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life". John 3:16

What will be our legacy gift - a gift we leave upon our own death?

It will most likely honor our loved ones. Will it also honor God and God's continued work here on earth?
