NEW THIS SEASON: Connections to MAGADAN

Are you looking for great travel deals this summer? Consider visiting Russia. With the ruble having lost much of its value, Russia has become much more affordable for travelers. For products and services priced in rubles - restaurants, tour guides, museum admissions - that translates into significant savings. While some tourist attractions have increased their ruble entrance fees, they are still more affordable for visitors with foreign currency.

Note that the prices for imported goods and services with prices based in euros or dollars have not changed much. For example, the cost of high-end hotels has changed little. (Most hotels, however, have not substantially raised their ruble prices).

KAMCHATKA, Russia's adventure travel capital, teems with unique wildlife, and its geysers and volcanoes form a UNESCO Heritage Site.
Round trip fares from Anchorage to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky start at $1,040*

The flight to Kamchatka continues on to YAKUTSK, Russian diamond capital and home to Lena Pillars Nature Park, a UNESCO Heritage Site. Round trip fares from Anchorage to Yakutsk start at $1,540*

*Approximate taxes: round-trip Alaska-Kamchatka ticket are $61.50; round-trip Kamchatka-Yakutsk ticket are $40.00.

Land of Fire and Ice by Diana Gleadhill provides a firsthand look at the wonders of traveling to Kamchatka, and is the newest and the most comprehensive guidebook to Kamchatka written in English.

Tent Life in Siberia  by George Kennan. He joined the Russian American Telegraph Company in 1864 to survey a route for a telegraph line from the Bering Straight across Siberia. He traveled via dogsled up the Kamchatka Peninsula and as far West as the area now home to the city of Magadan. His adventures en route, including many interesting encounters with the native peoples, are recounted in this classic book.

Georg Wilhelm Steller, appointed as naturalist to Vitus Bering's second expedition, first arrived in Kamchatka in 1740. His careful observations of Kamchatka's Native peoples are quite entertaining, and are among the few ethnographic and linguistic descriptions made during the initial acculturation process as Russians first settled the region. Steller's extensive natural history includes special contributions to the study of fish and ornithology.
