What a party it was! What a time of joy, celebration, friendship, and thanksgiving!

On Friday night, April 17, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of our peerless preschool, All Things Bright and Beautiful, with a lively, festive Bash. The celebration took place in both the Great Room and under a tent on the north lawn of the parish campus, and included a silent auction, fabulous live music, dancing, dining, drinking, lots of recollections, and even a birthday cake. Wednesday Class

We have been talking about the Trinity for a long time here at Holy Comforter.  Perhaps it is time to begin to share that with others in a more explicit way. What I hope we are moving toward here at Holy Comforter is the establishment of a Center for Trinitarian Spirituality.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Walter "Wally" Carlson, the father of Jill Klusendorf, our Director of Community Life, at the age of 74.  Mr. Carlson died rather unexpectedly May 21st. May God embrace Wally with never-failing peace and joy, and envelop his family with comfort and strength.

Our hearts and prayers also go out to Marsha Thigpen Perutz on the death of her husband, parishioner Gerald Perutz, on April 20.  Gerald died in London, and his funeral was held on April 30 at St. Laurence Church, Lurgashall, West Sussex, England.  May his soul rest in peace, and may light perpetual shine upon Gerald.

In happier news:  congratulations to Tate and Amelia Curti on the birth of their new baby girl on Monday, May 4. Tessa Mason Curti and her parents live in Concord, New Hampshire, and at four weeks of age, she is thriving.  Congratulations as well to her proud and delighted grandmother, Anne Curti.  Welcome, Tessa!

It's a Boy! Bob and Pru Burke also have a new grandchild:  Alexander Cochran Burke was born on May 7th to their son Tim and his wife, Courtney. Alexander weighed in at a robust 7 lbs, 8 oz. and is named after his Uncle Alex. Congratulations and God's blessings be with all generations of the Burke family.

Congratulations to Monica and Andrew Paine on the birth Thursday, May 7, of their daughter, Madeleine Marie Paine. She was born a few weeks early, but still managed to weigh in at 5 lbs, 8 oz. Blessings, also, be upon the proud grandparents, Jeff and Barbi Paine, and excited brother Charlie. Welcome, Madeleine!

Rector's Column

by The Rev. Dr. Jason L. Parkin, Rector

Life does not cease during the summer months. Many of our normal activities and obligations continue unabated. There are still places to go, things to do, people to see, responsibilities to discharge. Indeed, summer feels less like "summer" than it used to, in some strange but profound sense.

And yet, summer does afford many of us the chance to change rhythm a little bit. Whether it is the length of the days, the change in weather, or the easing of schedules, we have more of an opportunity during the summer to seek new ways of being reinvigorated and re-created. A few years ago, in these pages, I suggested a few ways to let God revive and restore each of us. Will you mind awfully if I do so again? Read more here...

Worship During the Summer

On Sunday, June 7, we will change to our summer liturgical schedule, with liturgies being offered at 8:00, 9:00 and 10:15 a.m.

As many are aware, during the summer, the 8:00 Eucharist remains largely unchanged, but, weather permitting, the 9:00 service is celebrated in an informal fashion in the columbarium courtyard, utilizing familiar music and hymns, different prayers, and other slightly new ingredients. Last year, we introduced the new mesh screen over the cloister that provides protection from the sun, yet allows in plenty of light and refreshing breezes. Finally, the 11:15 Eucharist is moved forward to 10:15, and includes musical offerings by individual members of our choir. So whether you are looking for a quiet, spoken service, a very warm and informal liturgy in a beautiful outdoor setting, or a structured Eucharist a little more relaxed than is the norm, there is something for everyone during the summer at Holy Comforter.

Confirmation 2015

On May 10, 2015, 32 young people from Holy Comforter were confirmed by the Rt. Rev. Jeffrey D. Lee, Bishop of the Diocese of Chicago. These students completed a course of formation, discussion, and study titled "Confirm not Conform" that met every Sunday afternoon for 90 minutes from January through early May. This class was a delightful group of students, funny, interesting, stimulating and engaged, and we offer them our prayers and congratulations. Read more here...

Thank You to Youth Liturgists

As all know, during the program year, young people serve as crucifers, acolytes, lectors, intercessors, videographers, and greeters, and without their service our 9:00 Eucharist would simply not take place. On behalf of the entire parish, our deepest thanks to these young people.

Caring Across the Generations

by Pastor Heath Howe, Family Ministries

My mother visited us recently, and as she left I found myself thinking, as I always do, "I wish she lived next door." In truth, I am delighted that my parents have created the life they have in Arizona. It fits them beautifully. I have learned a good deal from them from the choices they have made. "Never say never." "Live the life you want." "Young. Old. They are just words." These are just a few slogans that suit my parents and are lessons for me. Their living authentically empowers me to continue to do the same. I pray I am passing that along to Sophie and Eli.

A Memorable Summer

by Mary Johnson, Director of Children's Ministries & All Things Bright & Beautiful

As we head into the summer months, I'm feeling very nostalgic. I know this is because in the past two months, I have attended memorial services where the reflections by family members recalled great memories of family summer vacations. It stirred my memories of the wonderful summer vacations I had with my family at Lake Okoboji, Iowa. Read more here...

ASP Service Trip to Virginia

by Charlotte Long, Youth Ministries

Appalachian Service Project (ASP) was founded in 1969 by the Rev. Tex Evans to provide home repairs for impoverished families living in Central Appalachia. On Saturday, June 13th, 8 High School kids and 4 adults from Holy Comforter will pile into rented minivans and drive 10 hours into the lush and beautiful Appalachian Mountains. For 5 days, we will get up early, eat Wonder Bread sandwiches, and work alongside Christians from all over the United States to make people's homes warmer, safer and drier. Read more here...

Is CHC a Good Steward?

by Marc Franson, Stewardship and Canvass

Church of the Holy Comforter asks each of us to be good stewards. So if CHC asks this of us, it is fair to ask back: Do we practice what we preach? Is CHC a good steward? I looked at this from the perspective of our recent canvass theme: Reality, Spirituality and Community. Read more here...
