Relocated baseball field latest construction project
When parents and fans arrive for home soccer and football games in the next few weeks, they will no doubt notice the construction on the baseball field. The baseball relocation and resurfacing project is the latest step in the Providence Master Plan. The project includes moving the baseball field so that the new home plate will be about where the pitcher's mound was. Revamped House System generates excitement
The House Leadership System is now in its seventh year and is undergoing some changes under the direction of
Mr. Steve Beyl '99, assistant principal/director of student leadership. One of the changes includes the revision of the annual House Cup Competition. Instead of a single day of competition in September that results in one House claiming the coveted House Cup for the year, the new system encourages participation and friendly competition throughout the year.

Students will still participate in the school-wide day of competitive events on Sept. 25, now renamed Guerin Day, in honor of St. Mother Theodora Guerin, foundress of the Sisters of Providence, who founded our school in 1951. But the competition doesn't end there. Each of the first three academic quarters, the House with the most points earned will earn one of four spots in a new spring competition. The winning House of Guerin Day also earns a spot. The date and specifics of the competition have yet to be determined.

Students earn points for their House each quarter in several ways, including: 
  • Wearing their House lanyard. Mr. Beyl tallies the number of lanyards worn during lunches twice a month.
  • Attending liturgy in the morning before school. Liturgies are offered every morning except Tuesday in the chapel.
  • Attending "House Nights" at specified events. The first House Night is at this evening's Volleyball game vs. Mercy, with freshman playing at 5, JV at 6 and varsity about 7. Students will sign in for the house at the entrance.
  • Earning a spot on the Honor Roll.
  • Contributing to or participating in school-wide service projects, including the recently announced Stuff the Backpacks project. (See next story)
The points are tallied on the House Cup Scoreboard posted in the cafeteria. The scoreboard is updated at least weekly so that students can see how well their House is doing.

The scoreboard was designed and created by Andrew Jones '96, brother of Corinne (Alles) Beyl '99 and a local graphic designer. The House names and numbers for the score are on magnetic strips that can be easily moved, removed or added to update the ranking and the score for each House.

Service project to benefit local homeless
Stuff the Backpacks, the first school-wide service project of the school year, seeks to help those who are homeless by providing some basic necessities to take care of their daily needs. Students are asked to donate travel size toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, towel, lip balm and deodorant as well as toilet paper, toothbrushes, dental floss, and new or clean, gently used t-shirts or socks. Students may drop off the items in designated boxes in their House faculty sponsor's classroom through Sept. 11.

The items will be given to the Coalition for the Homeless, a local organization that counted around 1,600 homeless people in the metro area in January 2014. The group determined that most of those people stay in homeless shelters overnight but during the day, they must leave and find somewhere else to go. The metro area is estimated to have 8,000 people without a home throughout the year. The coalition will be taking the items donated by Providence students and creating at least 100 backpacks with basic necessities to give to those in need.

Girls Golfers named to Elite team
Congratulations to Girls Golf team members junior Alexa Wilson and seniors Colleen Geldermann, Brooklin Grantz, Nicole Kruer and Maryann Fitzpatrick,who have been named to the inaugural Indiana Elite North vs. South Girls Golf Invitational. The invitational will be held Oct. 10-11 at at Ironwoods Golf Course in Fishers, Ind.

College Night offers info on college search process
The Guidance Office is hosting College Night on Tues., Sept. 1 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Activity Center for parents interested in learning about the college application process. Parents of all students are welcome to attend, especially parents of seniors. A panel featuring representatives from three local colleges (private and public) will walk parents through the general admission process and provide tips on comparing schools. The event is free and offers valuable information, so please plan to attend.

Parents of seniors be sure to regularly check the "Guidance" tab at the top of school website homepage. The drop down box selections offer information such as the monthly senior newsletter, SAT/ACT info, links of interest including ACP, Indiana e-Transcript, diploma requirements and scholarships to college. Please remind your seniors of these resources as well.

Notice to our Publics,

This month, Our Lady of Providence Jr. & Sr. High School continues the program to monitor and improve indoor air quality (IAQ) in our school. We are proud to be taking a leadership role in providing a safe, comfortable, and productive environment for our students and staff so that we achieve our core mission-educating students. Our school will utilize guidance provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to prevent IAQ problems and respond to any IAQ issues that may arise.

Providence Dads invited to special cookout
All current, future and past Providence dads are invited to attend a cookout sponsored by the Providence Dads Club and Alumni Association before the home football game vs. Holy Cross on Sept. 4.

Mrs. Miller returns as sub for Mrs. Van Laan
Mrs. Nancy Miller, who taught English at Providence for 20 years from 2004 to 2014, has returned to teach during the maternity leave for Mrs. Krissy (Beyl) Van Laan '05. 

Mrs. Van Laan and her husband welcomed their first child, Stanley Van Laan, last week. Congratulations to the Van Laan family, and welcome back to Mrs. Miller!

This year's fall show is  Anne Frank & Me . Show dates are Sept. 11-13 and Sept. 18-19. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:00 p.m.; the Sunday show is at 2:00 p.m.

Anne Frank & Me  by Cherie Bennett is about the awakening of a modern teen's understanding of the Holocaust when she is transported to Nazi-occupied Paris in the early 1940s. Tickets are $10 and can be

Save the Date: ASAP Appreciation Dinner
Join us for the Annual Student Assistance Program (ASAP) Appreciation Dinner on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. at Huber's Orchard and Winery Plantation Hall. The guest speaker for this complimentary dinner is Dr. Daniel J. Elsener, president of Marian University in Indianapolis, who will offer his thoughts on the value of Catholic education. 

Prior to joining Marian in 2001, Dr. Elsener was the executive director for the Office of Catholic Education and executive director for the Office of Stewardship and Development for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, as well as superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Wichita, Kan. Under Dr. Elsener's leadership, in 2010 the university announced the creation of the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine, which became Indiana's first medical school in 110 years.

Pioneer  Golf Scramble registration ends tomorrow
The 17th Annual Pioneer Golf Scramble to benefit Our Lady of Providence Jr-Sr High School's Annual Student Assistance Program is scheduled for next Thursday, Aug. 27, at Covered Bridge Golf Club with a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start. Alumni Night to feature free cookout
All alumni are invited to attend a special cookout and reception sponsored by the Alumni Association and Providence Dads' Club on Friday, Sept. 4, before the home football game vs. Holy Cross. Register for Alumni Glow Golf
The Alumni Association has a few more spots available for teams in the second annual Alumni Glow Golf Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Covered Bridge. The Glow Golf Challenge is played in a fun, unique format and is open to alumni, family and friends ages 21 and over. The event is open to the first 15 teams of four. The cost is $50 per player and includes nine holes of golf, a special glow-in-the-dark golf ball, appetizers and prizes. 

The evening begins with registration and happy hour at 7:00 p.m. Shot gun start is approximately 8:15 p.m. Price includes appetizers, golf, one glow golf ball, and prizes.  If you are interested in forming a team, please contact  Brad Denman '02 at [email protected].

Providence welcomes two new theology teachers
Two new teachers are guiding our theology students this school year.  Mr. Michael Loner is in his first year at Providence, but not his first year of teaching. He previously taught theology at Rivet Middle/High School in Vincennes, Ind. He now teaches all the sophomores and one section of seniors. Mr. Kelsey Hillary is teaching his first year of high school after teaching junior high theology three years at St. Raphael the Archangel School in Louisville. He now teaches all freshmen and one section of seventh graders. Click here to read more.

A total renovation of the PHS baseball facility is now under way. It involves not only the installation of a synthetic turf infield but completely repositioning the layout of the field as well. These changes prompted research of the history of the Pioneer Baseball program.
