Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success or put its failures behind and start over again. That's the way life is, with a new game every day, and that's the way baseball is.

One 'L' of a Super Bowl in Santa Clara
by Andy Dolich
|
The last time the Bay Area played host to a Super Bowl was on Jan. 20, 1985, when the hometown San Francisco 49ers beat the Miami Dolphins 38-16 to win their second NFL title. The game was played at Stanford stadium before the stadium was downsized.
Super Bowl XIX matched two of the NFL's greatest QBs, Joe Montana and Dan Marino. The Niners had lost only one regular season game and the Dolphins only two during the regular season. The 49ers went on to win three more NFL titles.
Super Bowl 50 will mark the championship game's return to the Bay Area on Feb. 7, 2016, at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. Like the 49ers, the L.A. Rams hosted in their market but lost to the Steelers at the Rose Bowl in 1979.
The last time a team hosted the game in its home stadium was never. No local team has ever even participated in a home-stadium Super Bowl. That is, until the "Big L," Super Bowl 50, when the 49ers will host the Oakland Raiders in the most earth-shaking matchup in the game's history.
Why will this happen? No oddsmakers in their right minds can see this coming.
Lucky L: You remember when the game was referred to with the roman numeral? Very quickly the fans went all "Et Tu, Brute," and that roman number went the way of Caesar, replaced by 50. It's a sure sign that the essential nature of the NFL universe is about to change.
Region of champions: Three World Series in five years and maybe more to come. Nobody saw that coming. Now the local football teams are feeling a bit deflated watching Orange and Black parades down Market Street.
Raiders of the Lost Park: After all the recent speculation as to where the Raiders will be playing in 2016, the Super Bowl will show them there is no place like home, and Mark Davis will make a definitive decision to keep the Raiders uniquely Oaktown or move in with his Super Bowl opponents in Santa Clara. From the beginning, the league wanted this plan, which is working so well in New York with the Jets and the Giants.
Think presidential: In honor of Inauguration Day, 1985, which was held that Jan. 21, Ronald Reagan, a longtime California resident and former Golden State governor from 1967 to '75, became the first president to participate in a Super Bowl coin-toss ceremony. However, he did it from the White House, via satellite, since he was busy that weekend.
Clearly President Obama will be thinking about being at Super Bowl 50 and jetting into Siliconia to flip the ceremonial coin as part of his farewell tour.
I will be looking skyward when Republican frontrunner Donald Trump's Custom 757, which is named "Trump Force One," will join the flyover, with or without permission.
What a miracle this 50th anniversary Super Bowl will be!
