PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Greetings to all BCGS Members and Friends,

As the summer winds down, we're looking forward to an active fall, with lots of great genealogy events in Bucks County and elsewhere.  September brings our biggest event of the year - the Bucks County Ancestry Fair is on the 19th!  And...

WE NEED YOU!!

We need lots of help on the day of the event!  You can pick from a variety of jobs for just an hour or two of your time.  All volunteers have the opportunity to purchase a beautiful "Maui Blue" BCGS polo shirt, which will identify you as being a part of the Fair's volunteer team.  C'mon, it's fun!  Contact Peg Felter (see Fair article below) for more details.

Please note the different date (not the first Saturday) and location (not the David Library) for our September monthly meeting:  it will be held in the library of Council Rock High School North on Saturday, September 12th.  Come "Back 2 School" and learn from other BCGS members!

Don't forget to check our database regularly for your Bucks County ancestors.  Nancy Heath continues to do an amazing job, making records available to the public which have never before been online.

Enjoy the rest of the summer, and see you in September!

Warm Regards,
Christine Roberts

REFRESHMENTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER MEETINGS

We need someone to pick up two containers of coffee at Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts. Both places supply the cups, stirrers, sugar and cream.  You will reimbursed by the BCGS treasurer at the meeting.  We also need one person to bring a snack.

Also, if you are a member and bring refreshments to a meeting, the meeting fee is waived. If you are a non-member and bring refreshments,  the meeting fee is reduced from $10 to $5.

INSIDE BCGS

There are lots of volunteers doing things for Bucks County Genealogical Society behind the scenes.  (We have no paid employees.)  In the coming months, we'll tell you about some of the work that is being done.

This is Joann Cosgrove, VP-Projects, also known as the Cemetery Lady!   When Joann isn't visiting family, singing in the Bucks County Women's Chorus, digging in the dirt as a Master Gardener, and doing research on her ancestry, she is working on various projects for BCGS.

Take a look at the cemetery page of the BCGS website. There are more than 250 cemeteries listed there and most of them have information about the location, ownership and where to find the burial records.  During the last couple of years, Joann would frequently gather three or four folks together for a road trip to get information and take photos of cemeteries. There is always lots of laughter on a road trip with Joann, sometimes some singing, and the trip is likely to end with an ice cream stop!

She is also working on a special cemetery video project with the BCGS publicity director; the video will appear on our website.  There will be more information on that at a later date.

For the past few months, Joann has been working with a committee to put together the main event for the 9th Annual Ancestry Fair to be held on September 19th at Bucks County Community College.  The committee has been doing some serious research into the Goodnoe family.  This will be a great presentation!

Joann stepped up for the past several months to serve as Hospitality Chair, organizing refreshments at our monthly meetings.  And, i f you have a conversation with her about your research, don't be surprised if she sends you information about a website or makes a suggestion where you might look.
We're not sure how Joann fits everything into her calendar - and we are fortunate to have her serving with BCGS.

BOOK REVIEW

Nathan Dylan Goodwin, author  of The Lost Ancestor, a Morton Farrier Forensic Genealogist Story, supplied a preview copy of his book for review. Here are two reviews by BCGS members.

MARY BUTASH'S REVIEW: As genealogists, we spend hours, and years sifting through record sets to try to piece together the bones of our ancestors' stories. Nathan Dylan Goodwin, in his fictional creation, The Last Ancestor, has given us flesh with the bones. By alternating chapters of present and past, Nathan gives us the search for information by Morton Farrier, Forensic genealogist as well as the story of "what happened to Mary" as it unfolds.

Morton reveals the genealogical process in a real life situation that removes the "textbook" feel. I found myself keeping notes for my own research. Especially helpful was the useage of sticky notes on a wall, not unlike a television detective's "murder board", to assemble bits of information to piece the "puzzle" together visually. Morton, and his fiancĂ© Juliette who is a police trainee, find there are persons who don't want the truth of the past to come to light and Morton's research puts them at risk. On the flip side, the tale of young Mary in the early years of the 20th century brings you mystery, love, heartbreak and secrets. The format is well crafted allowing the research and the true story to travel neck and neck, like two horses in the same race. Ultimately, what matters in a novel is that the plot is intricate; the characters real; and the book riveting. For me, The Last Ancestor met all my criteria and I really enjoyed the read. The plot provided intrigue with multiple twists and turns. I really cared what happened to the characters. And finally, I couldn't put the book down until I saw it all come together.

I will definitely look forward to reading more by this author.

PAT GESSNER'S REVIEW: I am a fan  of British TV shows and read British historical books, so I approached this book with a little background of British historical information. That may be one of the reasons that I found the sections of the book which dealt with the early 20th century, slow-moving and predictable. I knew what some of the characters were going to do long before the author revealed it on the pages of the book.

In the 21st century sections of the book, the research done by the book's main character, forensic genealogist Morton Farrier, was surprisingly easy. He was able to get almost instant replies to emails sent to individuals and research questions sent to major repositories. It certainly moved the story along, but I would have enjoyed a little more suspense.

Early in the book, I guessed who was organizing the harmful activity and what was going to happen to one of the characters.  There wasn't much mystery for me in this genealogical crime mystery book.

BEGINNERS CORNER

Have you looked at  archive.org?  It is an internet archive of free books, movies, software, and more.  To find books about Pennsylvania and Bucks County, go to the website, click on American Libraries, put "genealogy" in the search box, and then scroll down and click "Pennsylvania" on the right side.

RESEARCH TIP

This tip is from Genealogy Search Tip:  Make certain you've looked through the list of all databases for a specific state or region on FamilySearch. There may be different databases constructed from the same or similar records (sometimes the indexes were made from the same records but by different agencies). Sometimes when sorted alphabetically or by "recentness" the databases do not appear together because of their names.

For example, look at both  Pennsylvania, County Marriages, 1885-1950 and Pennsylvania, Marriages, 1709-1940

CLEVER IDEA

A visitor at our August meeting uses a business card with her name, email address, and phone number on one side.  On the back of the card, she lists the surnames that she is researching, along with the states or countries where she might be looking.  It is easy to accomplish this with Avery business cards that have double side print option.   Thank you, Kitty, for the clever idea.
