A new season is almost upon us. The promise of Spring brings with it the anticipation of a fresh start with newness and a clean slate. There is a hope that Spring brings. A hope that the bleak Winter will soon be over, that sunshine and warm days will be back. A hope that the weather issues and constant rescheduling of February days will be gone and plans can be made once again. A hope that time spent inside staying warm can be replaced with a hike to the top of a mountain.

I was thinking about this hope and also thinking about many of the people's lives that the United Way of Greater Kingsport impacts. Many of these people have lived through a season of their life that may be best described like the hard Winter we have just encountered. A time when plans made were not fulfilled. A time when they had to hunker down just to survive. One way to best describe the agencies and programs that United Way supports is to liken them to the hope Spring brings to those who have experienced a cold Winter. I think that is something we can all relate to and appreciate this month.

I just wanted to take a moment and say thanks. Thanks to each of you for sharing your resources to bring the hope of a new season into the lives of neighbors in our community. As you Give, Advocate and Volunteer, you drive and inspire community change. Thank you!

Live United,

Agency Fast Facts:

Did you know there are 36 million adults who cannot read above a third grade reading level?
(ProLiteracy, 2015)

How difficult would life be if you had low literacy skills? Imagine not being able to:
  • Read the newspaper
  • Complete medical forms or job applications
  • Write a letter or email
  • Help your child with homework
  • Balance a checkbook
Literacy Council of Kingsport's mission is to provide one-on-one tutoring for adults & identified children to improve their reading and writing skills and to be an advocate for literacy throughout the community.

Literacy Council offers 3 programs:

  • Adult Basic Literacy: Tutors utilize a phonics-based reading curriculum to help students develop literacy skills
  • English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL): Tutors help ESOL students learn to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Children's Tutor: Tutors work with identified children at local schools who need extra reading services
Volunteers make an IMPACT!

Volunteers provided 5,662 hours in 2014 which equates to a value of $127,677!!!

VOLUNTEER and help combat literacy!

ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING LEADS TO SUCCESS!!!
  • Jake's Story:
Jake started at a 5th grade reading level and within a year has increased to an 8th grade reading level! He enjoys reading novels and just finished reading "Huckleberry Fin".
  • Ivanna's Story:
Ivanna started with limited English speaking and life skills. Ivanna is now able to effectively communicate and has become an active participant within the community. She enjoys volunteering at Kingsport Ballet, helping with her church's food pantry and even volunteers to read with children. As Ivanna's English speaking and life skills improved, so did her self-confidence!
  • Ashley's Story:
Ashley's doctor's office referred her to Literacy Council because she needed help understanding how to manage her health needs. Ashley is now able to read and understand her diabetes manual, medication labels and insurance forms.

2015 UWGK Board Retreat

On March 10th United Way of Greater Kingsport held our annual Board Retreat at HMG Medical Plaza.  The Board Retreat was a hands-on learning experience around ways to receive funding from UWGK. Board members were given a pressing need in our community and had to discover the doors to UWGK funding and the keys to open them.
