CH 12 "THE PROBLEM OF GUILT"
III. THE FEAR OF REDEMPTION

Beneath all your grandiosity, which you hold so dear, is your real call for help. For you call for love to your Father as your Father calls you to Himself. In that place which you have hidden, you will only to unite with the Father in loving remembrance of Him. You will find this place of truth as you see it in your brothers, for though they may deceive themselves, like you they long for the grandeur that is in them. And perceiving it you will welcome it, and it will be yours. For grandeur is the right of God's Son, and no illusions can satisfy him or save him from what he is. Only his love is real, and he will be content only with his reality.

Sickness is a defense against the truth.

WHAT IS IAMBIC PENTAMETER?

<AUDIO><VIDEO>

Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio

No one can heal unless he understands
what purpose sickness seems to serve. For then
he understands as well its purpose has
no meaning. Being causeless and without
a meaningful intent of any kind,
it cannot be at all. When this is seen,
healing is automatic. It dispels
this meaningless illusion by the same
approach which carries all of them to truth,
and merely leaves them there to disappear.

Sickness is not an accident. Like all
defenses, it is an insane device
for self deception. And like all the rest
its purpose is to hide reality,
attack it, change it, render it inept,
distort it, twist it, or reduce it to
a little pile of unassembled parts.
The aim of all defenses is to keep
the truth from being whole. The parts are seen
as if each one were whole within itself.

Defenses are not unintentional,
nor are they made without awareness. They
are secret magic wands you wave when truth
appears to threaten what you would believe.
They seem to be unconscious but because
of the rapidity with which you choose
to use them. In that second, even less,
in which the choice is made, you recognize
exactly what you would attempt to do,
and then proceed to think that it is done.

Who but yourself evaluates a threat,
decides escape is necessary, and
sets up a series of defenses to
reduce the threat that has been judged as real?
All this cannot be done unconsciously.
But afterwards your plan requires that
you must forget you made it, so it seems
to be external to your own intent;
a happening beyond your state of mind,
an outcome with a real effect on you,
instead of one effected by your self. |

It is this quick forgetting of the part
you play in making your "reality"
which makes defenses seem to be beyond
your own control. But what you have forgot
can be remembered, given willingness
to reconsider the decision which
is doubly shielded by oblivion.
Your not remembering is but the sign
that this decision still remain in force,
as far as your desires are concerned.

Mistake this not for fact. Defenses must
make facts unrecognizable. They aim
at doing this, and this they seem to do. |
Every defense takes fragments of the whole,
assembles them without regard to all
their true relationships, and thus constructs
illusions of a whole that is not there.
It is this process which imposes threat,
and not whatever outcome may result.

When parts are wrested from the whole and seen
as separate and as wholes within themselves,
they become symbols standing for attack
upon the whole, successful in effect,
and never to be seen as whole again.
And yet you have forgotten that they stand
but for your own decision of what should
be real, to take the place of what is real. |

Sickness is a decision. It is not
a thing that happens to you quite unsought,
which makes you weak and brings you suffering.
It is a choice you make, a plan you lay
when for an instant truth arises in
your own deluded mind, and all your world
appears to totter and prepare to fall.
Now are you sick that truth may go away,
and threaten your establishments no more. |

How do you think that sickness can succeed
in shielding you from truth? Because it proves
the body is not separate from you,
and so you must be sep'rate from the truth.
You suffer pain because the body does,
and in this pain are you made one with it.
Thus is your "true" identity preserved,
and the strange, haunting thought that you might be
something beyond this little pile of dust
silenced and stilled. For see, this dust can make
you suffer, twist your limbs and stop your heart,
commanding you to die and cease to be.

Thus is the body stronger than the truth,
which asks you live but cannot overcome
your choice to die. And so the body is
more powerful than Everlasting Life,
Heav'n more frail than hell, and God's design
for the salvation of His Son opposed
by a decision stronger than His Will.
His Son is dust, the Father incomplete,
and chaos sits in triumph on His throne.

Such is your planning for your own defense.
And you believe that Heaven quails before
such mad attacks as these, with God made blind
by your illusions, truth turned into lies,
and all the universe made slaves to laws
which your defenses would impose on it.
Yet who believes illusions but the one
who made them up? Who else can see them and
react to them as if they were the truth?

God knows not of your plans to change His Will.
The universe remains unheeding of
the laws by which you thought to govern it.
And Heaven has not bowed to hell, nor life
to death. You can but choose to think you die,
or suffer sickness or distort the truth
in any way. What is created is
apart from all of this. Defenses are
plans to defeat what cannot be attacked.
What is unalterable cannot change.
And what is wholly sinless cannot sin.

Such is the simple truth. It does not make
appeal to might nor triumph. It does not
command obedience, nor seek to prove
how pitiful and futile your attempts
to plan defenses which would alter it.
Truth merely wants to give you happiness,
for such its purpose is. Perhaps it sighs
a little when you throw away its gifts,
and yet it knows with perfect certainty
that what God wills for you must be received.

It is this fact which demonstrates that time
is an illusion. For it lets you think
what God has given you is not the truth
right now, as it must be. The Thoughts of God
are quite apart from time. For time is but
another meaningless defense you made
against the truth. Yet what God wills is here,
and you remain as He created you. |

Truth has a power far beyond defense,
for no illusions can remain where it
has been allowed to enter. And it comes
to any mind that would lay down its arms
and cease to play with folly. It is found
at any time; today, if you will choose
to practice giving welcome to the truth. |
This is our aim today. And we will give
a quarter of an hour twice to ask
the truth to come to us and set us free.

And truth will come, for it has never been
apart from us. It merely waits for just
this invitation which we give today.
We introduce it with a healing prayer
to help us rise above defensiveness,
and let truth be as it has always been:

" Sickness is a defense against the truth.
I will accept the truth of what I am,
And let my mind be wholly healed today." |

Healing will flash across your open mind
as peace and truth arise to take the place
of war and vain imaginings. There will
be no dark corners sickness can conceal
and keep defended from the light of truth.
There will be no dim figures from your dreams,
nor their obscure and meaningless pursuits
with double purposes insanely sought,
remaining in your mind. It will be healed
of all the sickly wishes that it tried
to authorize the body to obey. |

Now is the body healed because the source
of sickness has been opened to relief.
And you will recognize you practiced well
by this; the body should not feel at all.
If you have been successful, there will be
no sense of feeling ill or feeling well,
of pain or pleasure. No response at all
is in the mind to what the body does.
Its usefulness remains, and nothing more. |

Perhaps you do not realize that this
removes the limits you had placed upon
the body by the purposes you gave
to it. As these are laid aside, the strength
the body has will always be enough
to serve all truly useful purposes.
The body's health is fully guaranteed
because it is not limited by time,
by weather or fatigue, by food and drink,
or any laws you made it serve before.
You need do nothing now to make it well,
for sickness has become impossible. |

Yet this protection needs to be preserved
by careful watching. If you let your mind
harbor attack thoughts, yield to judgment or
make plans against uncertainties to come,
you have again misplaced yourself, and made
a bodily identity which will
attack the body, for the mind is sick. =

Give instant remedy, should this occur,
by not allowing your defensiveness
to hurt you longer. Do not be confused
about what must be healed, but tell yourself:

" I have forgotten what I really am,
For I mistook my body for myself.
Sickness is a defense against the truth,
But I am not a body. And my mind
Cannot attack. So I can not be sick."

ACIM Edmonton, CA

LESSON 136
Sickness is a defense against the truth.

Sarah's Commentary:

Following up on yesterday's Lesson, about the way we defend ourselves against future possibilities through our planning, we are told, in this Lesson, that we also defend ourselves against the truth by being sick. The purpose of sickness is to hide the truth, to attack and distort reality (W.136.2.3) and to prove that we are actually bodies. (W.136.8.2) So the more that truth dawns on our minds, the more threatened the ego becomes. This is again a very long Lesson and very important, but can be difficult to understand. I know that each year that I study the Course, more glimmers of understanding come through, although I still struggle with much of it. What has been helpful to me, in getting this Lesson, is to see that anything in the illusion that we invest in is a defense against the truth.

So, yes, while sickness is a defense, so is judgment, anger, jealousy, perfectionism, withdrawal, arrogance, specialness, depression, victimhood and on and on. In other words, whenever we engage in anything in the illusion, believing in its reality, we are keeping love at bay. We are saying that what is real is what we are holding in our thoughts and thus God's Love can't be real. Why? Because these states are mutually exclusive. We are either choosing Heaven or hell, a grievance or forgiveness. The ego is all about keeping us invested in the illusion. Sickness is a way to do just that. I know when I am sick. That is when the body seems to be very much at the forefront of reminding me that the body is what I am. And what this demonstrates is our vulnerability. In fact, Jesus tells us that sickness " is a witness to your frailty, your vulnerability, and your extreme need to depend on external guidance." (T.8.VIII.6.2)(ACIM OE T.8.VIII.76 )

This is the purpose that sickness serves, but it is a purpose that has no meaning because Jesus tells us that it is causeless. (W.136.1.2-3) Thus, if sin can be said to be the cause of sickness, and there is no sin, then it has no reality, and the effect can't really be there. The effect must be an illusion. If sickness is the effect, then it can't be real, because a false belief has caused it. Another way to look at this is that the separation from God never happened and thus everything, including sickness, is an illusion. " When this is seen, healing is automatic." (W.136.1.4) This tells us that healing is not of the body. Only the mind's false belief is what needs to be healed, the belief in sin and guilt. This guilt is projected onto the body and now the body is sick. And now we believe that there is a problem in the body, but it is not in the body. This is why Jesus says, " Like all defenses, it is an insane device for self-deception." (W.136.2.2) We are believing that sickness is in the body, not the mind. Thus, it works effectively as a defense against the truth and hides and distorts reality. (W.136.2.3)

We hold the belief that things happen to us and we have no control over these happenings. We look for the cause outside of ourselves. Jesus says, " Sickness is a decision. It is not a thing that happens to you, quite unsought, which makes you weak and brings you suffering." (W.136.7.1-2) That decision is made so quickly that we don't even notice how and when it was made. It is a decision to turn to the ego, when we get too close to the truth.

You may actually notice moments of distress as you get closer to the truth through your study of the Course. We may experience headaches, drowsiness, hunger, get asthma attacks, stomach pains, back aches, nausea or any other kind of bodily distress. Or we may experience a car accident, or a financial setback. Recognize that these are all defenses against the truth. The ego is threatened by truth and wants to remind us that we are bodies. And the purpose of the ego is always to keep us rooted in our bodies.

We can get quite distraught to be told that it is a choice we make to be sick. It is, in fact, startling to be told that sickness is not something that happens to us, but a choice that we have made. " Now are you sick, that truth may go away and threaten your establishments no more." (W.136.7.4) Did I choose this sickness, suffering and pain? Isn't my body just making me suffer? We think the cause is outside of the mind and we are just the effect of it. Why is it hard to believe that I would be sick by my own choice? Because this Lesson tells us our decision is " doubly shielded by oblivion." (W.136.5.2)

What does this mean? Basically, it is saying that while defenses seem to be unconscious, they are actually made with our awareness. (W.136.3.1-3) This happens so quickly that we forget, which is the first shield of oblivion, and then we forget again that we chose to forget, which is the second shield. So you can see how well protected this defense is, and why, after all of this forgetting, we then believe that sickness is something that just happens to us and is beyond our control. (W.136.5.1) And to change this, we need willingness to reconsider this decision to be sick, (W.136.5.2) but we can't reconsider the decision, if we don't know we made it. Through our forgetting, we are protecting our individuality and seeing the problem outside of us.

Why do we do this? To prove we are bodies, that we are separate from the truth and that we can defeat God by saying we exist, so He does not. We believe in what we made, but that does not change our reality as God's Son. We still are as we were created. Our identity as a separate individual can't be the truth about us. I can remember, as a very young child in Sweden, living in a refugee camp and feeling vulnerable and unprotected, that I deliberately made a choice to, always and only, rely on myself. I did not realize it until my adult years, when I revisited this decision through a guided meditation. I realized that I had actually made a conscious decision to push God out and rely solely on myself. The adults in my life were unreliable and undependable, in my judgment. They could not be trusted. And that was what prompted my decision to move God off of His throne and take authority over my own life. We have all made these kinds of decisions, albeit not always recalled in this way. In fact, this was just a later awareness of my seemingly unconscious decision at that time. The fact is that we all made this decision at the time of separation, and my childhood decision was just a replay of the original decision. And this decision still plays in our minds as we choose to identify with the separate, independent, self.

Yet our decisions do not change the truth about ourselves or about God. " What is unalterable cannot change. And what is wholly sinless cannot sin." (W.136.11.7-8) " Such is the simple truth. It does not make appeal or might nor triumph. It does not command obedience, nor seek to prove how pitiful and futile your attempts to plan defenses that would alter it." (W.136.12.1-3) Thus, the Holy Spirit is always shining His light, but never demanding anything from us nor diminishing us in any way, only waiting for our decision to accept the truth about ourselves. All He wants is to give us happiness. (W.136.12.4) When we see that our way is not the way to happiness, we will want to do what is required as well, on behalf of our own happiness. " Defenses are plans to defeat what cannot be attacked." (W.136.11.6)

God does not fight our decisions, but simply waits for us to change our mind. It is interesting to read that God sighs at the futility of our efforts to struggle on our own. Of course this is just a metaphor, as God does not sigh, but it is a statement of the joy that is in us that just has to be acknowledged. It was give us by God in our creation. We can think that we can be sick, that we die, but it isn't the truth about us and what we believe makes no difference. Our attempts at throwing away our gifts are really futile because Heaven will wait patiently for us to awaken to the truth, knowing with certainty that we will (W.136.12.5) and that we still remain as He created us. (W.136.13.5) It is reassuring to know that. The fact is that what God wills for us must be received, as we are part of Him. We are a Thought in the mind of God outside of time. That is our reality. There is nothing we need to do to earn our way back to God because nothing has come between us and our Source. We are there now. We just don't know it.

Our part is to watch our thoughts and bring our illusions to the truth. We can only be victims of attacks on ourselves by our own mistaken decisions. The purpose of the body is to invest us into thinking we are this limited self, but we can make another choice. To do so, we must be vigilant with regard to our thoughts of sin, guilt and fear. All of our beliefs and values must be questioned. All of our defenses must be brought to light. It is a sickness that is reflected in the belief that we have sinned and now the guilt of that is projected onto the body. Jesus tells us, " And you will recognize you practiced well by this: The body should not feel at all. If you have been successful, there will be no sense of feeling ill or feeling well, of pain or pleasure. No response at all is in the mind to what the body does. Its usefulness remains and nothing more." (W.136.17.2-5) I don't think that Jesus is talking here about the state of the body, only that, when we join with love in our minds and guilt is released in our meditation, then there is no body for that moment, because the truth is " At no single instant does the body exist at all. It is always remembered or anticipated, but never experienced just now." (T.18.VII.3.1)(ACIM OE T.18.VIII.65) Thus, in the holy instant, outside of time and space, there is no body there. It is an instant of feeling only love and peace rather than the demands of the body.

How are we to understand that? Is it really not about the body at all? Jesus is talking about the fact that sin, fear and guilt have been removed from the mind so there is nothing to be projected. Without projection there is no body to feel anything. There is then only the love of God in our minds, outside of the dream. The body is a figure in the dream and actually does not exist except as a projection of the mind. Until the time that we know our reality outside of this dream, the body can be a classroom where we can always be reminded where the real pain is and where the real joy is, which is in our minds. When we no longer identify with the body as the limited self, the body is healthy, not because of how it appears because that does not matter. What matters is that the guilt, sin and judgment have been removed so we can remember we are a being of light and love.

It is important though to remember not to punish and attack ourselves, if we do get sick. In fact, it may be just a sign that we are making progress on this path and getting closer to truth. Or it may be because we have been judging, distressed, or frustrated about things in our lives and sickness shows up. So we watch our thoughts of anger, despair, discouragement, jealousies, specialness, comparison, or whatever comes up. And our job is simply to look at them and bring them to the truth. Remember it is all about opening the mind to receive the love. Separation was the way down the ladder into the darkness of this world and miracles are the way back. Jesus reassures us that once we start on this path, the way is made simple and serene. The only thing that maintains the dream is our choice for the ego as the teacher. It will never show us the way to happiness. And yes, it will get more vicious as we get closer to the truth because its existence depends on our allegiance to its thought system.

Truth will never be thrust on us, but only waits for our invitation. Isn't that beautiful? There is no coercion. Power does not need to be coercive. That is why we too are just to be a witness to the truth without proselytizing it to anyone. It is only for our own awakening based on our invitation. And everyone will arrive at this place. When the pain of life is sufficient, everyone becomes more willing to do this practice as a way out. Everyone will eventually come to this decision.

Ask the truth to come to you and set you free today. And truth will come, for it has never been apart from us. Start with the healing prayer: " Sickness is a defense against the truth. I will accept the truth of what I am, and let my mind be wholly healed today." (W.136.15.6-7)

" Yet this protection needs to be preserved by careful watching. If you let your mind harbor attack thoughts, yield to judgment or make plans against uncertainties to come, you have again misplaced yourself, and made a bodily identity which will attack the body, for the mind is sick." (W.136.19.1-2) This is our function in healing our minds, which is to watch our thoughts of separation and seeing our defenses. Ask for help to let these thoughts go so that you won't keep hurting yourself with your thoughts of self-attack. If thoughts are to be changed, we must become aware of them. Keeping them in the dark keeps our defenses intact. " They are secret, magic wands you wave when truth appears to threaten what you would believe. They seem to be unconscious, but because of the rapidity with which you choose to use them." (W.136.3.2-3)

" Do not be confused about what must be healed, [which is the mind's decision for the ego] but tell yourself: " I have forgotten what I really am, for I mistook my body for myself. Sickness is a defense against the truth, but I am not a body. And my mind cannot attack. So I cannot be sick." (W.136.20.2-7)

A Course in Miracles

Chapter Twelve

III. The Fear of Redemption

10 You may wonder why it is so crucial that you look upon your hatred and realize its full extent. You may also think that it would be easy enough for the Holy Spirit to show it to you and dispel it, without the need for you to raise it to awareness yourself. Yet there is one more complication which you have interposed between yourself and the Atonement, which you do not yet realize. We have said that no one will countenance fear if he recognizes it. Yet in your disordered state, you are not afraid of fear. You do not like it, but it is not your desire to attack which really frightens you. You are not seriously disturbed by your hostility. You keep it hidden because you are more afraid of what it covers.

11 You could look even upon the ego's darkest cornerstone without fear if you did not believe that, without the ego, you would find within yourself something you fear even more. You are not afraid of crucifixion. Your real terror is of redemption. Under the ego's dark foundation is the memory of God, and it is of this that you are really afraid. For this memory would instantly restore you to your proper place, and it is this place that you have sought to leave.

12 Your fear of attack is nothing compared to your fear of love. You would be willing to look even upon your savage wish to kill God's Son if you did not believe that it saves you from love. For this wish caused the separation. You have protected it because you do not want the separation healed, and you realize that, by removing the dark cloud that obscures it, your love for your Father would impel you to answer His call and leap into Heaven. You believe that attack is salvation to prevent you from this. For still deeper than the ego's foundation, and much stronger than it will ever be, is your intense and burning love of God, and His for you. This is what you really want to hide.

13 In honesty, is it not harder for you to say "I love" than "I hate"? You associate love with weakness and hatred with strength, and your own real power seems to you as your real weakness. For you could not control your joyous response to the call of love if you heard it, and the whole world you think you control would vanish. The Holy Spirit, then, seems to be attacking your fortress, for you would shut out God, and He does not will to be excluded.

14 You have built your whole insane belief system because you think you would be helpless in God's Presence, and you would save yourself from His love because you think it would crush you into nothingness. You are afraid it would sweep you away from yourself and make you little. For you believe that magnitude lies in defiance and that attack is grandeur. You think you have made a world which God would destroy; and by loving Him, which you do, you would throw this world away, which you would. Therefore, you have used the world to cover your love, and the deeper you go into the blackness of the ego's foundation, the closer you come to the love that is hidden there. And it is this that frightens you.

15 You can accept insanity because you made it, but you cannot accept love because you did not. You would rather be slaves of the crucifixion than Sons of God in redemption. For your individual death is more valued than your living oneness, and what is given you is not so dear as what you made. You are more afraid of God than of the ego, and love cannot enter where it is not welcome. But hatred can, for it enters of its will and cares not for yours.

16 The reason you must look upon your delusions and not keep them hidden is that they do not rest on their own foundation. In concealment they appear to do so, and thus they seem to be self-sustained. This is the fundamental illusion on which they rest. For beneath them and concealed as long as they are hidden is the loving mind that thought it made them in anger. And the pain in this mind is so apparent when it is uncovered that its need of healing cannot be denied. Not all the tricks and games you offer it can heal it, for here is the real crucifixion of God's Son.

17 And yet he is not crucified. Here is both his pain and his healing, for the Holy Spirit's vision is merciful, and His remedy is quick. Do not hide suffering from His sight, but bring it gladly to Him. Lay before His eternal sanity all your hurt, and let Him heal you. Do not leave any spot of pain hidden from His light, and search your minds carefully for any thoughts which you may fear to uncover. For He will heal every little thought which you have kept to hurt you and cleanse it of its littleness, restoring it to the magnitude of God.

18 Beneath all your grandiosity, which you hold so dear, is your real call for help.

19 Save him from his illusions that you may accept the magnitude of your Father in peace and joy. But exempt no one from your love, or you will be hiding a dark place in your mind where the Holy Spirit is not welcome. And you will exempt yourself from His healing power, for by not offering total love, you will not be healed completely. Healing must be as complete as fear, for love cannot enter where there is one spot of fear to mar its welcome.

20 You who prefer specialness to sanity could not obtain it in your right minds. You were at peace until you asked for special favor. And God did not give it, for the request was alien to Him, and you could not ask this of a Father Who truly loved His Son. Therefore you made of Him an unloving father, demanding of Him what only such a father could give. And the peace of God's Son was shattered, for he no longer understood his Father. He feared what he had made, but still more did he fear his real Father, having attacked his own glorious equality with Him.

21 In peace he needed nothing and asked for nothing. In war he demanded everything and found nothing. For how could the gentleness of love respond to his demands except by departing in peace and returning to the Father? If the Son did not wish to remain in peace, he could not remain at all. For a darkened mind cannot live in the light, and it must seek a place of darkness where it can believe it is where it is not. God did not allow this to happen. Yet you demanded that it happen and therefore believed that it was so.

22 To "single out" is to "make alone" and thus make lonely. God did not do this to you. Could He set you apart, knowing that your peace lies in His Oneness? He denied you only your request for pain, for suffering is not of His creation. Having given you creation, He could not take it from you. He could but answer your insane request with a sane answer which would abide with you in your insanity. [And this He did. No one who hears His answer but will give up insanity.] For His answer is the reference point beyond illusions from which you can look back on them and see them as insane. But seek this place, and you will find it, for love is in you and will lead you there.
