Celebrating 40 Years of Tranquility & Beauty in Our Community
In 1975, a group of Greenwich Village activists founded the Village Committee for the Jefferson Market Area, which made sure that the dream of a garden for the community could become a reality on the site of the recently demolished Women's House of Detention.
Since then volunteers have joined in to help with gardening chores and to keep the Garden open six days a week from the time the tulips bloom until the cold winds blow in October. Moreover, hundreds of Friends of the Garden have stepped up with the financial help that is so needed for this garden to flourish.
This past winter began quietly, the snow was late, but it was followed by harsh cold winds that surprised our unsuspecting shrubs. As a result, we have lost 19 of our mature plantings. Our Rhododendrons, Azaleas, and Camellias were the primary casualties. But sadly, some of the canes of our famous climbing roses suffered significant damage resulting in loss.
As stewards of this unique space in Greenwich Village, we have always been committed to maintaining the highest horticultural standards. We use only natural/organic products to sustain our environment. Our goal is to present visual displays that intrigue and delight our visitors.
We thank our donors, our volunteers and our visitors for 40 years of support. Your continued generosity allows us to provide our community with this tranquil oasis. A Shout-out For our Volunteers!
 
We send special thanks to the hearty volunteer Garden Greeters who came out on unseasonably cold days this Spring to make it possible for us to open our gates to visitors. It seemed that the whole Village was eager to view and photograph the tulip displays or just spend some time in our garden for the community after the long, long winter.
All our volunteers are essential to the operation of our Garden. Tuesday through Sunday throughout our season, weather permitting, volunteer Greeters, coordinated by Kacie Carl, welcome visitors at the gate.
Every Monday when the Garden is closed to the community, a group of Volunteer Gardeners coordinated by Diane Darrow, under the professional guidance of Horticulturist/Garden Designer Susan Sipos, are working magic in the Garden.
