Well, the results are in from last week's vote on the next series to run. Hands down, the winner was FET Principles And Circuits. (If you don't believe it, you can click here to see the results for yourself.) So, as promised, you can find the first part here, today. Cool, huh?

And since last week's vote worked out so well, here's your chance to vote again and help further shape the content in N&V. This week's question is:

How do you feel about using microcontrollers in your projects?

(5 easy multiple choice answers to pick from!)

Thanks again to HITEC for helping to make all this possible! You guys rock!

That's it, enjoy!
Laptop Digital Picture Frame
Turn A Broken Laptop Into A Digital Picture Frame
Give an old laptop a new life by turning it into a digital photo gallery.

As a techie, I have accumulated a lot of hardware over the years and it pains me when I have to get rid of things that are old but still potentially useful. Such was the case with a laptop computer that had a broken hinge, broken Wi-Fi, and a broken sound system. It seemed destined for the scrap heap, even though it could still function as a portable computer.

FET Basics
FET Principles And Basics - Part 1
FET (Field-Effect Transistor) basics. Part 1 of 4

Field-Effect Transistors (FETs) are unipolar devices, and have two big advantages over bipolar transistors: one is that they have a near-infinite input resistance and thus offer near-infinite current and power gain; the other is that their switching action is not marred by charge-storage problems, and they thus outperform most bipolars in terms of digital switching speeds.

Arduino Duemilanove

One of the things that I learned in the midst of this Workshop series is that the Arduino is a darn good system for beginners and is even simpler than the Butterfly for the complete novice to use.

The Retro Shield

The Retro-Shield: Where The Past Meets The Present
Combine a vintage vacuum tube with an Arduino for an updated version of an AM broadcaster.

I bought a vintage Allied Radio Knight-Kit 12-in-1 Electronic Lab on eBay. It used a 12K5 low voltage vacuum tube instead of transistors. As I was wiring up my "wireless AM broadcaster" project, it hit me. Why not combine the past with the present? Put an Arduino with a vacuum tube shield - a Retro-Shield!
