A Message From Greg

MERRY CHRISTMAS

AND A

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Nancy and I thank you for the many cards, gift cards, and the congregational gift that our Board Chair Jim Rybka presented to us during Sunday worship on the 21st. We are grateful to be your pastors. We thank God for the opportunity to serve this great church. Christmas blessings to you and we look forward to another year of serving with you in Christ's Name.

Peace, Greg

'THEY'RE JUST PROVERBS'

How do we make decisions about aging parents, raising children, social media, scientific advances that prove we can do it, but never ask why we do it, the widening gap between rich and poor, bullying, how we treat others?  The book of Proverbs offers some challenging insights.

 Jim's Jots

It had been said that the Church is like a body with many parts each able to do its own special abilities  (Romans 12:4). This fact is certainly true for our First Christian Church. We have many talents in our congregation. We definitely have a variety of gifts, but we all have the same spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4).  If we use our collective talents wisely, we can continue to do wonderful ministry together here where God has placed us. One of my official roles is to chair the Nominating Committee which will be meeting in February. The Nominating Committee is a special group that is a conduit to connect as many of our talents with the right opportunity to serve God and our Church. If anyone has a talent and is hearing a call to serve our church, but does not know where tobegin, please contact me by e-mail (jimrybka@gmailcom) or by phone (413-7200) or on any Sunday morning (I am often up in the balcony before and after the second service). We have many ministry and committees opportunities. You may find and make new friends as you work together with people who have seen but do not yet know. You may find that you grow in your Christian identity as you serve others in need. The possibilities truly are limited by your willingness to try. May we all have a joyous Christmas season and a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year !

Thank you's

Mitten Tree

Many thanks to Ruth Circle, Harriet Beeler and Lenora Smith, Co-Presidents, for hosting the annual Mitten Tree on Sunday evening, December 14.  The soups were all delicious and the Fellowship Hall looked very festive.   Our Youth put on an unforgettable Christmas story for us to enjoy.   The parts of Mary and Joseph were especially dear!  Thank you, Michelle Schluttenhofer.

Thank you to our congregation for donating a record number of new mittens, gloves, scarfs, hats, and underwear for the Lafayette School Corporation children.  735 articles were donated, up from 607 last year.  We also had $289 cash donated, which will also go the LSC.  Shirley and Dick Ellsworth will make the delivery for us.

The Mitten Tree was begun in 1963 by the CWF Members Lucille Maris, Betty Mowery, and Marge Griffin, when they learned that some children in the LSC could not attend school on especially cold days because they didn't have enough warm clothing.

Many years ago, Ruby Ward, CWF Vice President, wrote this poem to thank everyone who attended the Mitten Tree Supper:

The pieces have been spoken

The carols have been sung

We hope you liked the efforts

Of our grown-ups and young.

We hope we have brought you

Much joy and  Christmas cheer

And that, God willing,

You'll come back next year.

The CWF does hope you'll come back next year, and remember to pick up mittens, gloves, scarves, hats, and underwear as you shop throughout the coming year!  Thanks again to Ruth Circle and to everyone who contributed or helped to make this a memorable Mitten Tree Supper.

LUM JUBILEE CHRISTMAS

THANK YOU for all you did to make Jubilee Christmas 2014 the biggest success EVER. I am certain you are feeling a little bit more tired this morning than usually -- but I hope it because of a great sense of pride and accomplishment. I was so very fortunate to be able to visit 12 different sites -- and the excitement and love at each site was powerful and contagious. That was created by YOU!

Collectively you made super-heroes of the parents (guardians) of 600 families and have brought Christmas joy to over 1600 children. You also served your parish or organization very well -- creating numerous opportunities for your members to engage in making our community a much better place for those of our neighbors who are less fortunate than we. You mobilized thousands of volunteers and donors to collect and distribute over $250,000 worth of toys, food and gift cards -- all of which were purchased and will be spent locally.

I would also like to thank all of your pastors for their continued support of LUM -- especially Jubilee Christmas. Special thanks to the LUM team who worked Jubilee Christmas Day, and prior, to support the program and make this all happen -- including Linda Hicks, Sandra Dunn Dunn-El, Mary Anderson, Eileen Weiss, Tricia Sembroski...and of course Joe Micon. Thank YOU again for a memorable day of love and giving -- and Jubilee Christmas joy.

Pastoral Care News:

The names listed below are folks who have difficulty making it to Sunday services. Many of these folks have been active members of our congregation, but, for one reason or another, can not physically make it to Sunday services on their own. The pastoral caregivers ask that each of you hold these folks in your prayers:

Mary Bogan, June Brummett, Mary Coon, Jeanne Dible, Marilyn Galloway, Mary Goodwin, Russ Graefnitz, Harriett McDowell, Suzie Mounts, Betty Mowery, Martha Oliver, Ann & Bob Prather, June Schwartz, and Edith Sipple.

A huge thank you to all those who contributed to Jubilee Christmas this year. As Jubilee day arrived the toy room was filled with toys, The clothing area had clothing items everywhere. The blankets were stacked high and the stocking stuffer tables were loaded with little goodies. The volunteers flooded in with smiles and hugs everywhere. What a wonderful feeling of joy and love filled the room. Our guests were greeted with love and were happy to be at First Christian Church.  I had a large number of Jubilee guests thank us for all we were doing for them. One in particular came to me and told me that she has been a guest at
Jubilee for a number of years now and she felt more welcome here than she had at any other location. How wonderful!!I cannot ever thank all of you enough for your support in helping make Jubilee Christmas a wonderful day and allowing our guests to be the "hero" on Christmas day. Thank you for all your donations and thank you to everyone that came on Jubilee day to make this such a wonderful day. Without your help and support this program could not be possible. God

Bless each and everyone of you. Sandie Hauser
