$500 SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE TO ATTEND NATIONAL GAMBLING CONFERENCE, APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MAY 15

 

Northstar will be offering five $500 scholarships to attend the National Council on Problem Gambling's annual conference July 10-11 in Baltimore.  Gambling counselors and others who are providing services to problem gamblers are invited to apply. To apply, please write a one-page letter addressing the type of population you serve and how you would like to impact problem gambling in Minnesota. Letters can be sent to [email protected]. The deadline is May 15.

TWELVE-STEP AND MUTUAL SUPPORT GROUPS - WHAT DOES SCIENCE TELL US? WORKSHOP ON MAY 28.

Project Turnabout will host a workshop examining the empirical evidence for the efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and mechanisms of mutual-help organizations, including the results from the latest randomized controlled trials of twelve-step facilitation interventions. The workshop will be led by John F. Kelly, Ph.D., Director of the Addiction Recovery Management Service at Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine at Harvard Medical School. NORTHSTAR TO HOST WEBCAST TRAINING ON SBIRT - JUNE 25

Northstar will be hosting a free live webcast on Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT). The training will cover screening for gambling problems, motivational prelude to engagement and participation in behavior change process and, if indicated, referral to treatment. The webcast will be presented by Ken Winters, Ph.D., director of the Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research at the University of Minnesota, and takes place on June 25 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. You may attend the live presentation or log on to watch the webcast. DHS RELEASES SUMMARY OF MINNESOTA PROBLEM GAMBLING SUMMIT

The Minnesota Department of Human Services has released a report summarizing findings and next steps from the state's problem gambling shared vision summit. The summit included a broad representation of stakeholders who discussed the major issues and challenges facing those seeking to identify and treat compulsive gamblers in Minnesota.
