We Remember Florence Nightingale

Yesterday, the Episcopal Church remembered the Feast Day of life long Anglican, Florence Nightingale. Best known for her nursing of troops during the Crimean War, Miss Nightingale is also famous as the first to recognize the role of infection control  in healthcare, and the importance of organizing healthcare systems. She was the first health scientist.

Born into a wealthy family that resisted her urge to engage in a nursing career, Miss Nightingale believed it to be her "divine purpose." She pursued philanthropy and charity in the village where she was raised in Derbyshire, rather than the social life her mother preferred. Eventually she was allowed to pursue nursing training.

Nightingale immediately grasped the importance of cleanliness and good hygiene in disease prevention and healing. She was instrumental in saving many lives during the War in the Crimea due to her rigid insistence on cleanliness. She set up hospitals and schools of nursing. But the compassion and kindness that she offered earned her the name "The Lady with the lamp."

By age thirty-eight, she was ill from Crimean fever, but rather than give up, she worked from her bed at home, writing books of instruction on how to set up hospitals and schools of nursing. She was consulted during the U.S. Civil War about how to set up field hospitals. She continued her work for decades, finally dying at age ninety.  She was an excellent writer, penning many texts on health care and its delivery that are still regarded as classics. She also authored works about the spiritual aspects of caring for others.  Characteristically, she wanted a quiet funeral and "The Angel of the Crimea" is buried in her family's plot in Hampshire, England.

Resurrection Church To Resurrect Campus Grounds
Mark Your Calendars for August 29, 2015

Back in March, the Bishop's Committee had a retreat, and one exercise was to walk the campus grounds and return with our views of what we saw. One of the major items we noted was the view from Justin Lane looking toward the back north portion of the property line, from the Youth Building to the residence house and Parish Hall parking. That area presented unsightly tree growth and ground cover. Plus, it was covering up a storage building that needs repair and painting. Now that we have Progress School starting soon, and it will be involved in that area, too.

We need your horsepower along with tools: rakes, picks, hoes, pruning tools, chain saws, axes   and steel bars to help break up some concrete and bring any other tools that may help to clear the area. We will start at 8:30 a.m. and stop at noon. Refreshments and food will be provided.

What a way to show our workmanship and join in fellowship for a few hours and then look back at what was done. In order to get a head count for food, please contact Michael Paulsen at  church Sunday, or phone: 512-255-5741 or e-mail: paulsenmh@earthlink.net
School Supplies Drive
The Episcopal Church Women of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection invite you to join us in a School Supplies Drive beginning July 27, 2015 and ending August 23, 2015. We are asking for your help.

Many school age children will not have basic school supplies due to today's economic conditions. We are conducting a School Supplies Drive and are asking for your cash (or check) donation. Your donation will help to buy school supplies in bulk. Please note on your check, "School Supplies Drive." If you wish to make a cash donation, please place it in an envelope addressed to "School Supplies Drive." Checks and envelopes may be placed in the offertory during each church service

We appreciate your generosity with this endeavor.
News from the Atrium

Dear Friends,

"The Kingdom of Heaven is like . . ."  Jesus knew how to tell stories.  His parables are stories that point the way to the biggest truths about God and His great love for us.  Children young and old are captivated by the parables, and they feature greatly in our Atrium: the Mustard Seed, Pearl of Great Price, The Leaven, are ones ours kids are familiar with.

This fall, we'll be introducing ones they and we may not be as familiar with:

The Hidden Treasure (Matt 13:44), "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field;"

and the Growing Seed (Mark 4:26-29):

"The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground.27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how.

28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come."

What a joy it is to discover God's truths together with the children.

Yours in Christ,

Kelly
