Happy Groundhog Day
February 2015
At the end of one of my favorite movies, Groundhog Day, Bill Murray's character finally lives the perfect day.  After repeating February 2nd innumerable times, he eventually makes each day a masterpiece by developing his talents and hobbies to the fullest potential, but most importantly, by serving others and showing genuine love to his friends without expecting anything in return.

In his final news report, Bill Murray reports,

"When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the of warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn't imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter."

Whether it's six more weeks of winter or not, make the best of your training and your relationships.  Create the perfect swimmer's Groundhog Day!

It's Time for A Date

February is here and love is in the air! What does it feel like to fall in love? Would it be a stretch to compare it to being a swimmer?  I don't want to presume to be an expert on love or swimming but I am in love and I am a swimmer.

In the beginning, I experienced infatuation for both, my wife and the sport. I was attracted to the companionship and how I felt when I was in the water and with the one I loved.

Admittedly, I wasn't as mindful of the commitment and hard work required for both to continue to be enjoyable.  In the beginning, I experienced butterflies at my first meet.  Everything seems so new and exciting. I was smitten with the pretty blue ribbons. The bliss kept me from anticipating the next phase--hard work and some pain.  Yes, it takes hard work to be in a relationship and it takes hard work to be a swimmer. In fact, being a swimmer requires sacrifices and being in love requires sacrifices; however, I believe the sacrifices are worth the reward. Especially, when you have a wife like mine or have an Olympic medal draped around your neck.

Nonetheless, sometimes the days of hard work and pain seem to out number the days of pleasure. In swimming, just like love, there's external demands that require you to balance your time in the pool and circumstances around you: school, homework, extra-curricular activities, socials, family, etc.

Thus, if you're not purposeful about creating this balance, your time in the pool may become less appealing and the passion you once had a distant memory. You may even question whether you really ever loved swimming at all? Mind you, you don't always "feel" like swimming anymore.

Now, if you're talking about love, someone might say, "You need a date night! You need take a break and have a designated time for fun and pleasure."  Speaking from experience, I LOVE date nights with my wife!

Likewise, as someone who travels the country encouraging swimmers, I can say with confidence--swimmers LOVE dates with their heroes.  If you're not sure how to create this fun date let us help by hosting a swim clinic in your area. It might be the best Valentine's Day gift you can give a swimmer. In fact, it might just keep one more swimmer in the pool for next season--keep the love of swimming alive!
HEADING TO ORLANDO

The Mutual of Omaha BREAKOUT! Swim Clinic is heading to Rowdy Gaines stomping grounds. Rowdy Gaines is one of our clinician heroes. He has been a pioneer in the sport in many ways and has left a legacy for all our clinicians to follow.  The Mutual of Omaha BREAKOUT! Swim Clinic family wants to thank Rowdy Gaines for sharing the love of swimming in Orlando.

On Valentine's Day, USA Swimming and Mutual of Omaha BREAKOUT! Swim Clinic team up to offer 60 Orlando area swimmers a special date to attend an abbreviated swim clinic hosted by Josh Davis. The participants will also receive two free tickets to cheer on Pros at the Arena Pro Swim Series. Following the clinic, Davis will sit in the stands with the participates and cheer on Team USA and fellow Pros. On Sunday, February 15th the YMCA Aquatic Center will host a four hour event for anyone who wasn't able to take advantage of the free gift.  Click here for more information
