Divrei Tikvah  RJohannaHeadShot
From Rabbi Johanna Hershenson

March means the Hebrew month of Adar...about which the rabbis of the Talmud say, marbim b'simcha, "Increase joy!"

Adar is associated with joy because it contains the holiday of Purim.  On Purim we are invited to get silly-drunk.  An evil villain tries to destroy us, and to remember the day we get silly?  We get drunk?

I would argue that the Megillah is, in fact, a comedy.  Observations that lead to my conclusion are:

 - The name of God never appears in the book.

 - The male hero, Mordecai, is named after an ancient Near Eastern god called Marduk.

 - A Jewish uncle, playing a father role, marries his niece off to a non-Jewish king.

 - The innuendo of King Achashverosh extending his golden scepter to Queen Esther as he promises her anything her heart desires.

 - The fact that the Jews get three days to pillage their neighbors' property and violate their wives in retribution for Haman's crime's against them, and they do it!  This final scene in the book of Esther (usually left out of family friendly megillah readings) reminds me of the feeling of hilarity I experienced watching Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds, a film about a band of Jewish soldiers during WWII who kill Nazis and ultimately assassinate Hitler.

Humor is a magnificent tool for processing our deepest fears, expressing discomfort with our socially inappropriate urges, and coping with the truths that underlie stereotypes we see in ourselves.

Jews have used humor well in literature, theater, radio, film, and TV.  Philip Roth and the Coen Brothers explore ideas about manliness among Jewish men.  Woody Allen, Albert Brooks, and Jerry Seinfeld have caricatured Jewish mothers.  Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner play with our history of persecution.

Anybody who has ever been involved in a relationship with another person intuitively knows the power of humor.  Laughter, especially at ourselves, is truly medicine for the soul.

Explore many opportunities during the month of March to laugh and have fun with TBT.  Storytelling on the evening of Purim, family fun with the Jewish Community School of Central Oregon, adult learning evenings at COCC exploring Jewish Humor in Hollywood, bring a Jewish joke to our Kabbalat Shabbat, and finally an Erev Shabbat dedicated to debating whether the latke or the hamantaschen is the quintessential Jewish holiday food.

~~ Rabbi Hershenson's office hours are by appointment. If you would like to set up an appointment, please contact her by email at: [email protected], or by phone at 541-213-9880.

Mark Schindel photo President's Message
From TBT President Mark Schindel

Members & Friends ~

Hope everyone had a LOVE-ly February.  While we can't claim Valentine's as a Jewish holiday, we were able to celebrate Tu B'shevat (New Year for the Trees) with a special seder organized by Evie Lerner, followed by Havdallah and a delicious meal.  We thank Evie and all the preparers and helpers that made it such a wonderful family event.

While on the topic of a seder, our Community Passover Seder on April 3rd is fast approaching, so please make sure to get your reservations turned in.  You can find the reservation form on our website.  We look forward to another wonderful seder and meal being planned by organizers Cathy Wynschenk and Kim Rafilson, with a host of many excellent helpers.  To get in the spirit of Passover, Marcia Uri is hosting a Passover Preparation Workshop on March 15th, but space is limited.

Also in March, besides our regular monthly services and events, there is a Purim celebration at Sunday School on March 1st.  Then, there will be a fun adult Purim evening of storytelling on March 4th.  Further details can be found in the Newsletter and Happenings e-mail.

In a recent e-mail concerning the notes from our follow-up Leadership Development Workshop, there were a lot of good ideas and suggestions to consider.  The Board is currently working on how best to use those ideas and suggestions to restructure our committees, groups, and roles to be able to more effectively and efficiently provide the desired level of ritual, social, educational, and community-minded activities, within the limits of our finances.

The challenge is that the more we grow and want to have more activities, the more we need members to help make all those wonderful events happen.  So, we are particularly focused on developing ways that people can help out in smaller, more incremental ways that can easily fit into their busy schedules.  We are creating more checklists and notes on how to do an event with step-by-step instructions and breakdowns of the work that can be handled by different people.  Of course, we will need your input and feedback to make sure it all works.

While we will still require certain roles that have greater responsibilities and time commitments, the goal is to make it so anyone can participate and help out in our many exciting activities, which we all get to enjoy.  By spreading the workload, it places less of a burden on any one or small group of individuals, plus it creates a more close-knit and engaged community.  We look forward to keeping you apprised of the rollout on this information, and hope you will get involved as much as possible.  We greatly appreciate your support.

B'Shalom,

    Mark Schindel

Coming up in March is a fun filled month with activities centered around Purim, Passover, and the theme of Jewish humor and laughter.

It starts on March first with a Megillah reading for everyone at the Jewish Community School of Central Oregon (which meets at Shalom Bayit) followed by games and activities for families.

On Wednesday, March 4th, we will be presenting The Whole Megillah story-telling evening at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Mark and Johanna Hershenson.  Come prepared to listen to some great story-telling, plus be prepared to share your own "reveal" story if desired.  You don't want to miss this great evening of food, stories, and laughter.

Tuesdays, March 10th and 17th we will present an adult education series at COCC on the topic of Jewish Humor in Hollywood, using radio, TV, and film clips to identify and discuss themes in American Jewish humor.

Friday evening, March 13th is a Kabbalat Shabbat evening at the Schlosberg/Spencer home. Bring the kids as well as the seniors as this will be a fun evening with plenty of laughter.  We expect you to even bring "funny" food - like appetizers with faces, meatloaf cupcakes or any creative food idea you can think up - AND a Jewish joke.  Watch for the Punchbowl evite.MarciaPrep

On Sunday, March 15th, we will start thinking about preparing for Passover.  We are presenting a Passover workshop at the Marcia and Ralph Uri home at 2:00 p.m. The participants will learn some new Passover recipes as well as how to make our home Seders more fun.

For those of you who have never attended our Saturday morning Munch and Torah, consider coming in March.  The discussion about the Torah portion is always very interesting and everyone has an opportunity to participate.  We seem to always see the same people at the Torah study and we wish that more of you would try it once because we are sure you will be surprised how enjoyable a morning you will have.  Also, there is always good food and coffee - another good reason to attend!  Put the date of Saturday, March 21st, 9:00 a.m. on your calendar and give Torah study a try. Or come at 10:30 a.m. to attend our very casual, short, and enjoyable Saturday morning Torah service.

We will end the month of March with a lovely, musical Erev Shabbat on Friday, March 27th. This will be a different and interesting service involving the kids in a debate about latkes versus Hamentaschen. We hope to see you all at the service.

Personal Stories From the
Back Door Cafe
by Jeanne Freeman

It hasn't been that cold a winter, fortunately, but hunger and cold don't necessarily go hand in hand. At the Back Door Caf breakfasts served on Wednesday mornings are on the rise. In February, Temple Beth Tikvah members served 110 meals; in January we served 125. On the Wednesdays that our friends from the Methodist Church serve, they are also seeing an increase.

But when I walk among the tables chatting with people, after the early morning rush to the food has slowed, I am always amazed that hunger and homelessness hasn't damaged the spirit of the people we serve.

I've been helping in the kitchen for more than three years; as a group, our members have been helping for more than two years. And in that time, you get to know the people and you worry about them.

I saw "Doris" in January after an absence of weeks; she's in her late 70s, married to the same man for 54 years. They have a place to live, but they are just getting by and Back Door and the other kitchens are a means of eating. We hadn't seen her because she had colon cancer and there were complications and she was hospitalized for quite a while. But she's feeling just fine, and glad to be alive, and soon she hopes to be able to eat more than the oatmeal and scrambled eggs that are easy to digest. And Doris blesses us for cooking breakfast.

"Charlie" is recovering from hernia surgery - "the size of a grapefruit," the doctor told him. He's got his tools and with his buddy "Dave" they're hoping they can buy an old truck and start picking up some jobs on the side. Both men work, they just don't earn enough to get by, but they do tell stories and they do laugh and smile.  And they really appreciate our getting up so early to come cook them a hot meal.

"Tom" calls me "Boston" - he caught my accent my first day at Back Door. My accent! He is serious Boston. He always asks me about my girls; I show him pictures of the snow. We danced at the Patriots victory and cried at the Red Sox loss. And we share a hug every week. He did complain a little during the November storms that his bike got buried and he had to walk a few miles from his tent to get back to the road to get breakfast. But it was delicious and worth the walk.

And "Patty" is playing on the Special Olympics basketball team; "Lisa" is just starting her second trimester and "David" just gushes about her; and everyone is staying out of "Steve's" way because he is obviously off his medications and babbling and belligerent; and yes there is "Jack" who is always grumpy and grumbling and doesn't understand how life has dealt him this blow. There is alcohol abuse and drug abuse and mental illness and disabilities and there are men and women who once had homes and normal lives and have lost everything.

And each and every one of our guests give us a smile, chat or joke, offer us thanks, bless us for our kindness - okay, except for "Jack" who grumbles at us.

It takes 8 - 10 of our members to efficiently prepare, cook, serve and clean up; we are fortunate to have 15 stalwarts who are willing to rotate through on a regular basis. Thank you to our always efficient, always smiling February Back Door Caf crew - Ann Rosenfield on eggs; Bonnie Ruby on English muffins and serving; Burt Litman for always shopping and filling in at multiple slots; Jeff Adler on the grill; Joe Jezukewicz on ham; Kathy Schindel at the oatmeal station; Mark Schindel egg scrambling; Michael Rosenfield on dishes; Neil Pyne on kitchen prep; Vivian Freeman serving. And thank you also to those who'll be there in the coming months - George and Linda Brant, Gerry and Phyllis Greenbach, and Ralph Uri.

Admittedly, the Temple Beth Tikvah Back Door Caf kitchen crew is not in need of new members - it's always a full crew. But we are there only one Wednesday per month. Every other Wednesday members of the Methodist Church prepare, cook, serve and cleanup. Ann Hand is in charge of the other days - Jan Freeman Bauer and Larry Freeman work some of those days and I know they can always use the help.

If you'd like information or to join a crew, email Burt Litman at [email protected].

All of the names have been changed; all of the stories are true. And me, they let me think that I'm in charge of the kitchen!

--Jeanne Freeman
