The Sweet Taste of Spring

Longer days brings to mind afternoons on sunny patios, and in Summerland there's nothing like spring wine tours on Bottleneck Drive. The Okanagan Spring Wine Festival is April 30 to May 10 and a number of Bottleneck Drive members are participating with special tastings of new releases. Also, mark your calendar for Heard It Through The Grapevine June 13-14, a Bottleneck Drive exclusive weekend of live music venues and tastings.

A Giant Challenge

March is colon cancer awareness month, the perfect time to register for the 2nd Annual Giant's Head Grind - Christopher Walker Memorial Race on May 16. Runners, walkers and crawlers alike are invited to "climb the Giant" starting from Peach Orchard Park on the shores of Okanagan Lake, to the top of Giant's Head Mountain. The race is 5.6 kilometres with a 500 metre elevation gain, and funds raised help colon cancer research.

Creative Expressions

Spring is a time for new growth, bright colours, and the return to outdoor markets. Check out the Summerland Tuesday morning Farmers Market, which opens in April.

Summerland Earth Week (April 20-26) is full of family-friendly events to inspire you to get growing.

In May, the annual Meadowlark Festival boasts a variety of activities and tours around the Okanagan, including many in Summerland. May is also the time to see Summerland downtown streets lined with vibrant painted banners.  Summerland Arts Council organizes the annual event and this year's theme is "Pictures of Sunshine."

Call to Action

Thanks to this year's early spring, Summerland's golf courses are already open and hikers are already hitting local trails. We're also counting down to the annual three-day ActionFest bonanza in early June. This family-friendly event includes live music and a midway in Memorial Park, packed streets for the annual parade, a kids fishing event, and of course lots of chances to get active! Watch 72 slo-pitch teams compete or cheer on participants during the Giants Head Run and the Man of Steel Triathlon. Action Fest has something for everyone at any age.
