Featured PWW FAQ:

How do I find out which items have recently been added to the shopping list?

On the home page of PWW there are links (pictured below) which will bring you to a list of new items that have been added to the shopping list on a particular day.

To place an order for any of those items, simply click 'Order Entry' to begin a new order, or add the items to an already existing order that has not yet been checked out.

National Nutrition Month and

Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables

March marks the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 35th annual National Nutrition Month (NNM)! The campaign focuses on the importance of making sound food choices and developing healthy eating and physical activity habits.

To  start, download our NNM calendar here . Recipes posted at www.foodlinkny.org.

The National Nutrition Month campaign coincides directly with Foodlink's nutrition education program Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables (JSY) that focuses on a diet high in fruits and vegetables.

In order to bite in to a healthy lifestyle, that food first has to look as good as good health feels! JSY strives to make each recipe as colorful as it is nutritious.  We have provided the following fresh, colorful recipe to kick of National Nutrition Month.

Asparagus Vinaigrette
Makes 6 Servings

Ingredients:

2 bunches asparagus (or 2 pounds)

3 tablespoons vinegar

2 tablespoons minced onion

1 tablespoon oil

1 garlic clove, minced

1/4 teaspoon pepper

Salt to taste

Directions:

1. Cook asparagus in a large pot of boiling water until tender, about 3 minutes. Drain and cool.

2. In a large bowl, mix together vinegar, onion, oil, garlic, pepper and salt.

3. Add asparagus and toss.

4. Serve and enjoy!

5. Refrigerate leftovers.

Heading into March 2015 the Cooking Matters Program has already worked with 11 different agencies throughout Monroe County to hold six-week courses focused on interactive cooking, food budgeting, and nutrition education. With help from volunteer chefs, nutritionists, and community members, 60 course participants successfully graduated from the Cooking Matters Program in January and February.

AGENCY SPOTLIGHT:

Charles Settlement House

Since it opened its doors in 1917, Charles Settlement House has provided Northwest Rochester communities with comprehensive human services to improve neighborhoods and quality of life.

Charles Settlement partners with Foodlink on many different levels, and in different capacities:

1. Food pantry and meal program serving neighborhood residents

2. Curbside Market site host

Garden Project at Charles Settlement House

The farmers market on wheels visited Charles Settlement over 20 times from July to September 2014, and sold affordable, local fruits and vegetables to almost 400 customers in the Charles Settlement neighborhood

3. Garden Project host

Since 2012, Charles Settlement has hosted a raised-bed garden of cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant, and beans on its front lawn. Food grown in the garden goes directly to the house's food pantry and meal program

4. Community Store Initiative

In 2015, Foodlink unveiled its first Community Store Initiative store, Stop One Meat Market at 352 Jay St, just down the street from Charles Settlement. Foodlink's partnership with Charles Settlement Neighbors in Action will allow the store to expand its reach in the JOSANA Neighborhood.

On behalf of Foodlink, THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!

For questions about Charles Settlement House and its programs, goals, or fundraising, please contact Roseann Lackey at [email protected]. If you're interested in having your agency spotlighted, please contact [email protected].

Foodlink is working on big plans for the 2015 Garden Project growing season. Food grown in these gardens goes directly to emergency food sources, like food pantries and soup kitchens.

In February, we gained four new partners, for a total of 26 locations in seven counties. Soon it will be time to plant peas, radishes, carrots and greens; we hope to have our first harvests as early as May and are looking forward to harvesting close to 15,000 pounds of food this year.
